Instruction Manual

1. Important Safety Instructions

Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations, and specifications provided with this power tool. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious injury.

General Power Tool Safety

  • Work Area Safety: Keep the work area clean and well-lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust.
  • Electrical Safety: Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges, and refrigerators.
  • Personal Safety: Always wear eye protection. Use personal protective equipment such as dust masks, non-skid safety shoes, hard hats, or hearing protection when appropriate. Stay alert, watch what you are doing, and use common sense when operating a power tool.

Angle Grinder Specific Safety

  • Guard Safety: Always use the guard provided with the tool. Ensure the guard is securely attached and positioned for maximum safety.
  • Wheel Selection: Use only wheels that are rated for the speed of the grinder and are suitable for the material being worked on.
  • Kickback Prevention: Maintain a firm grip on the tool. Position your body and arm to allow you to resist kickback forces. Kickback is the sudden reaction to a pinched or snagged rotating wheel.
  • Inspection: Inspect the wheel for cracks or damage before each use. Do not use damaged wheels.
  • Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation when grinding metal, as sparks are produced.

3. Setup

Attaching the Side Handle

  1. Identify the threaded holes on the gear housing of the grinder.
  2. Screw the side handle firmly into one of the threaded holes. The handle can be positioned on either side of the grinder for left or right-handed operation.

Installing/Adjusting the Wheel Guard

  1. Loosen the screw on the wheel guard clamp.
  2. Position the guard over the spindle housing, ensuring it covers the wheel adequately for the intended operation.
  3. Tighten the screw securely to fix the guard in place. The guard should be adjusted to deflect sparks and debris away from the user.

Mounting Grinding/Cutting Wheels

  1. Ensure the grinder is unplugged from the power source.
  2. Press and hold the spindle lock button.
  3. Using the provided spindle lock wrench, loosen and remove the outer flange nut.
  4. Place the desired 4-1/2 inch grinding or cutting wheel onto the inner flange, ensuring it sits flush.
  5. Replace the outer flange nut and tighten it securely with the spindle lock wrench while holding the spindle lock button. Do not overtighten.

4. Operating Instructions

Power Connection and Switching

  1. Ensure the grinder's switch is in the OFF position before plugging into a 120V/60Hz power outlet.
  2. To start the grinder, slide the switch to the ON position. For continuous operation, press the lock-on button.
  3. To stop the grinder, release the switch or press the lock-on button again if it was engaged.

Adjusting Variable Speed

  • The variable speed dial is located on the rear of the grinder body.
  • Rotate the dial to select the desired speed setting from 1 (lowest, 3,000 rpm) to MAX (highest, 11,000 rpm).
  • Lower speeds are suitable for polishing or delicate work, while higher speeds are for aggressive grinding and cutting.

Grinding and Cutting Techniques

  • Grip: Always hold the grinder firmly with both hands, one on the main handle and one on the side handle.
  • Starting: Allow the wheel to reach full operating speed before contacting the workpiece.
  • Grinding: Apply light, even pressure. Move the grinder smoothly across the surface. Avoid excessive pressure, which can cause overheating or kickback.
  • Cutting: Use a cutting wheel and hold the grinder at a slight angle (15-30 degrees) to the workpiece. Make shallow passes rather than attempting to cut through in one deep pass.
  • Cooling: Allow the tool to cool down during prolonged use to prevent overheating.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your angle grinder.

Cleaning

  • Always unplug the tool before cleaning.
  • Use a dry cloth or soft brush to clean the exterior of the tool.
  • Keep the ventilation openings clear of dust and debris to prevent overheating. Use compressed air if necessary.

Carbon Brush Replacement

  • The grinder is equipped with carbon brushes that wear down over time. When the motor performance decreases significantly or sparks become excessive, the brushes may need replacement.
  • Unplug the tool. Locate the brush caps on the sides of the motor housing.
  • Unscrew the brush caps and carefully remove the old carbon brushes.
  • Insert the new carbon brushes (2pc included) into their holders, ensuring they are oriented correctly.
  • Replace and tighten the brush caps.

Storage

  • Store the grinder in a clean, dry place, out of reach of children.
  • Protect the power cord from damage during storage.
