3. Setup
3.1 Headgear Assembly and Adjustment
The helmet comes with a pre-assembled 370 Speed Dial ratcheting headgear. Follow these steps to ensure a proper and comfortable fit:
- Attach Headgear: Align the headgear mounting points with the slots inside the helmet shell. Secure the headgear using the provided fasteners (knobs and screws). Ensure they are tightened securely but do not overtighten.
- Adjust Headband Size: Place the helmet on your head. Use the "Easy Grip-Easy Turn" ratcheting adjuster knob at the back of the headgear to tighten or loosen the headband until it fits snugly and comfortably around your head.
- Adjust Top Strap: The top strap can be adjusted to position the helmet correctly on your head, ensuring the viewing window is at eye level. Adjust the pins on the top strap to achieve the desired height.
- Adjust Tilt and Distance: Use the side knobs to adjust the tilt of the helmet and the distance of the helmet from your face. This ensures optimal viewing angle and prevents the helmet from hitting your chest when flipped down.

3.2 Filter Installation
The helmet includes a 2" x 4.25" drop-in Shade 10 filter and a high-impact polycarbonate window. These are typically pre-installed. If replacement is needed:
- Remove Retaining Frame: Locate the retaining frame on the inside of the helmet around the viewing window. Gently unclip or slide it out.
- Insert Polycarbonate Window: Place the clear high-impact polycarbonate window into the outer slot of the viewing area.
- Insert Shade Filter: Place the Shade 10 filter into the inner slot, ensuring it is correctly oriented.
- Re-install Retaining Frame: Secure the retaining frame back into place, ensuring all components are held firmly.

4. Operating Instructions
The Jackson Safety PL280 helmet features a flip-front design for convenience during welding operations.
- Pre-Weld Inspection: Before each use, ensure the helmet is clean, the filter is correctly installed, and there are no cracks or damage to the shell or headgear.
- Positioning: Adjust the headgear so the helmet sits comfortably and securely on your head, with the viewing window aligned with your eyes.
- Flip-Front Operation:
- To prepare for welding, pull the flip-front down until it locks into place, covering your eyes with the Shade 10 filter.
- To inspect your weld or perform non-welding tasks without removing the helmet, push the flip-front up. This reveals the clear polycarbonate window, allowing for clear vision while maintaining face protection.
- Welding: Begin welding only when the flip-front is in the down position and the Shade 10 filter is protecting your eyes.
5. Maintenance
Proper maintenance extends the life of your welding helmet and ensures continued protection.
- Cleaning the Helmet Shell: Clean the helmet shell with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that could damage the fiberglass material. Wipe dry with a soft cloth.
- Cleaning the Filter and Window: Remove the filter and polycarbonate window. Clean them with a soft cloth and a non-abrasive lens cleaning solution. Do not use paper towels or rough materials that can scratch the surfaces.
- Headgear Cleaning: The headgear padding can be removed and cleaned with mild soap and water. Allow it to air dry completely before reattaching.
- Inspection: Regularly inspect the helmet for cracks, chips, or other damage to the shell, headgear, and filter. Replace any damaged components immediately. Ensure all fasteners are secure.
- Storage: Store the helmet in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and corrosive substances.
6. Troubleshooting
