Operating Instructions

The MAX DISPOSER garbage disposal operates on a continuous feed system, allowing you to add food waste while the unit is running.

General Operation

  1. Turn on Water: Always turn on a medium flow of cold water before and during operation. Cold water helps solidify greases and oils so they can be flushed away, and it helps cool the motor.
  2. Turn on Disposal: Flip the wall switch or air switch (if installed) to turn on the disposal.
  3. Feed Food Waste: Slowly feed food waste into the sink opening. Avoid overloading the unit.
  4. Continue Running: Allow the disposal to run until all food waste is ground and flushed away. You will hear the motor and grinding sound change as the waste clears.
  5. Turn off Disposal: Turn off the disposal.
  6. Flush with Water: Let the cold water run for a few seconds after turning off the disposal to ensure all waste is flushed through the drainpipe.
Chart of common disposable and non-treatable food waste for garbage disposals

Image: A comprehensive chart categorizing food waste into three types: common disposable (e.g., chips, egg, vegetable), commonly used to dispose of easily clogged (e.g., eggshell, napkins, shrimp shells), and common non-treatable (e.g., metal, plastic, glass, animal fur), providing guidance on what can and cannot be put into the disposal.

What Can Be Disposed Of:

  • Most food scraps including fruit and vegetable peels, small bones (poultry, fish), coffee grounds, and small food remnants.
  • The 34 oz (1000 mL) capacity is ideal for typical household food waste.

What Cannot Be Disposed Of:

  • Large bones (beef, pork), fibrous materials (corn husks, artichokes), grease, oil, fat, metal, plastic, glass, paper, fabric, or harsh chemicals.
  • Avoid pouring hot grease or oil down the drain, as it can solidify and clog pipes.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and efficient operation of your MAX DISPOSER garbage disposal.

Cleaning the Disposal

  • Regular Flushing: Always run cold water for a few seconds after use to flush out any remaining food particles.
  • Odor Removal: To eliminate odors, grind citrus peels (lemon, orange) with cold water. You can also use ice cubes and a small amount of baking soda to clean the grinding chamber and blades.
  • Removable Splash Guard: The splash guard can be removed for cleaning. Periodically clean the underside of the splash guard and the sink flange to prevent buildup.

Preventing Jams

  • Always use a strong flow of cold water when operating the disposal.
  • Avoid putting large quantities of food waste in at once. Feed waste gradually.
  • Do not dispose of non-food items or highly fibrous materials.

Troubleshooting

If your garbage disposal encounters an issue, try these common troubleshooting steps. For persistent problems, contact customer support.

Disposal Not Starting / No Power

  • Check Power Cord: Ensure the power cord is securely plugged into a working electrical outlet.
  • Reset Button: Locate the red overload protector button on the bottom of the disposal unit. Press it firmly. If it pops out again immediately, allow the motor to cool for 10 minutes before trying again.
  • Circuit Breaker: Check your home's electrical panel for a tripped circuit breaker and reset it if necessary.

Disposal Hums But Does Not Grind

  • This usually indicates a jam.
    1. Turn off Power: IMPORTANT: Turn off the power to the disposal at the wall switch or circuit breaker.
    2. Clear Jam: Look into the sink opening with a flashlight. If you see an object, try to remove it with tongs or pliers. NEVER use your hand.
    3. Use Hex Wrench: Insert the hex wrench (provided) into the center hole on the bottom of the disposal unit. Rotate it back and forth until the grinding plate moves freely.
    4. Reset: Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit.
    5. Test: Turn on cold water, then turn on the disposal.

Leaking

  • Check Connections: Inspect all plumbing connections (sink flange, discharge tube, dishwasher connection) for loose fittings or damaged gaskets. Tighten connections or replace gaskets as needed.
  • Cracks: If the unit itself is cracked, it may need replacement.
