Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for accurate readings and the longevity of your WS85 sensor. The WS85 can be mounted in two primary ways using a pole with a diameter of 1 to 1.5 inches (pole not included).

1. Battery Installation

The WS85 requires 2 AA batteries (not included) for backup power, especially during periods of low sunlight. Ensure correct polarity when inserting batteries.

2. Mounting Options

Choose the mounting method that best suits your location and ensures unobstructed exposure to weather elements.

Important: Select a location that is free from obstructions (e.g., buildings, trees) that could interfere with wind or rain measurements. The solar panel should receive maximum direct sunlight throughout the day.

Operating Instructions

The WS85 sensor transmits data wirelessly to a compatible Ecowitt gateway or display console. It cannot be used as a standalone device.

1. Pairing with Consoles (Sold Separately)

The WS85 is compatible with Ecowitt consoles such as HP2560, WS3800, WS3900, WS3910, HP2550, WN1820, WN1821, WN1920, and WN1980. Refer to your specific console's manual for detailed pairing instructions. Typically, you will need to put the console into a sensor search mode.

Note: WN1920/WN1980 consoles may not display illumination and UV data from the WS85 directly but will upload it to the Ecowitt cloud. WN1820/WN1821 consoles will also upload WS85 data to the cloud without displaying it locally.

2. Pairing with Gateways (Sold Separately)

The WS85 can be paired with Ecowitt gateways like GW1100, GW1200, and GW2000. These gateways facilitate uploading sensor data to the Ecowitt cloud and other online weather services. Consult your gateway's manual for specific pairing procedures.

When multiple outdoor sensors (WS85, WS90, WS69, WS80, WS68) are used simultaneously, the rainfall, wind speed, and wind direction data from the WS85 will take priority for display and upload.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and extends the lifespan of your WS85 sensor.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your WS85 sensor, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No data displayed on console/gateway.Sensor not paired, low batteries, out of range, interference.Ensure batteries are installed correctly. Re-pair the sensor with the console/gateway. Move sensor closer to console/gateway. Check for strong interference sources.
Inaccurate wind speed/direction.Obstructions, incorrect orientation.Relocate sensor to an area free of obstructions. Ensure the directional symbol points North.
Inaccurate rainfall readings.Debris on sensor, sensor not level.Clean the haptic rainfall sensor surface. Ensure the sensor is mounted perfectly level.
Solar panel not charging.Panel dirty, insufficient sunlight.Clean the solar panel. Relocate sensor to an area with more direct sunlight exposure.
