3. Setup and Installation

3.1 Mounting

The Wengart CJX2-1201 contactor can be mounted using two methods:

  • DIN Rail Mounting: Clip the contactor onto a standard 35mm DIN rail.
  • Screw Mounting: Utilize the pre-drilled holes on the base of the contactor for screw fixation.

3.2 Wiring

Critical Note on Coil Voltage: The magnetic coil of this contactor requires an AC 24V (50/60 Hz) supply on terminals A1/A2. This device does not have a DC coil and must not be connected to a standard DC 24V power supply. Connecting to a DC supply will instantly burn out the coil and destroy the internal mechanism.

Ensure to verify the power supply type of your control system before wiring to prevent damage and ensure proper operation.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 General Operation

The contactor is activated by applying the specified AC 24V control voltage to terminals A1 and A2. This energizes the coil, closing the main contacts (3NO) and the auxiliary contact (1NC), thereby connecting the load to the power supply.

4.2 Load Classes (AC-3 vs. AC-4)

Understanding the load class is crucial for optimal performance and lifespan:

  • AC-3 Operating Class (Normal Motor Starting): Suitable for applications where motors start smoothly and then run continuously, such as compressors, fans, or standard motors. The maximum allowed total load is up to 12 A (e.g., 5.5 kW at 380V/400V).
  • AC-4 Operating Class (Jogging and Reversing): Applies to applications where main contacts must disconnect currents while the motor is stalled or for frequent switching operations (e.g., precise positioning of cranes or inching operations). For AC-4 operation, the current must be reduced to a maximum of 5 A. Adhering to this reduction significantly extends the contact life.

4.3 Integrated Auxiliary Contact (1NC)

The integrated 1NC (Normally Closed) auxiliary contact is designed for safety interlocks, particularly in reversible protection circuits (e.g., for lifting/lowering loads or gate actuators). This contact physically interrupts the power supply line of an opposing contactor's coil when the primary contactor is engaged, preventing dangerous phase short circuits if both contactors were to close simultaneously. This factory-integrated solution eliminates the need for costly external interlocking blocks.

5. Maintenance

Regular inspection of the contactor is recommended to ensure optimal performance and safety. Check for:

  • Cleanliness of terminals and contacts.
  • Secure wiring connections.
  • Signs of overheating or wear on contacts.
  • Proper mechanical operation of the contactor.

Always disconnect power before performing any maintenance or inspection.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1 Contactor Does Not Energize

  • Issue: Contactor coil does not pull in when control voltage is applied.
  • Solution: Verify that the control voltage supplied to terminals A1/A2 is AC 24V (50/60 Hz). This contactor is not compatible with DC 24V. Incorrect voltage type will prevent activation and can cause damage.
  • Solution: Check for loose wiring connections to the coil terminals.

6.2 Premature Contact Wear or Burning

  • Issue: Contacts show signs of excessive wear, pitting, or burning.
  • Solution: Ensure the operating current and application type are within the specified load classes (AC-3 or AC-4). If the application involves frequent jogging, reversing, or stalled motor conditions (AC-4), ensure the current does not exceed 5 A. Overloading in AC-4 conditions can significantly reduce contact life.
