5. Setup & Installation
Follow these steps to replace your carburetor and associated components. Refer to your trimmer's original manual for specific disassembly instructions if needed.
5.1. Preparation
- Ensure the trimmer engine is cool.
- Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug to prevent accidental starting.
- Place the trimmer on a stable, flat surface.
- If possible, drain the fuel tank into an approved container.
5.2. Removal of Old Components
- Remove the air filter cover and the old air filter element.
- Carefully disconnect the fuel lines from the old carburetor. Note their positions for reinstallation.
- Disconnect the throttle linkage from the carburetor.
- Unbolt the old carburetor from the engine intake manifold. Remove the old gasket.
- Remove the old spark plug using a spark plug wrench.
- If replacing fuel lines, fuel filter, or primer bulb, carefully remove the old components from the fuel tank and lines.
5.3. Installation of New Components
- Install the new fuel line kit, including the grommet, into the fuel tank. Connect the new fuel filter to the appropriate fuel line inside the tank.
- Install the new primer bulb if replacing.

6. Operating Instructions
After installation, follow these steps to start your trimmer:
- Refill the fuel tank with the correct fuel/oil mixture as specified by your trimmer's manufacturer.
- Reconnect the spark plug wire.
- Press the primer bulb several times (typically 5-10 times) until fuel is visible in the clear return line or the bulb fills with fuel.
- Set the choke lever to the FULL CHOKE position.
- Pull the starter rope firmly until the engine attempts to start or 'pops' (usually 1-3 pulls).
- Move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKE or RUN position.
- Pull the starter rope again until the engine starts.
- Allow the engine to warm up for 30-60 seconds before engaging the throttle.
Note: If the engine does not start after several pulls, check for fuel flow, spark, and proper choke setting. Avoid over-choking.
7. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your trimmer and its new carburetor kit components.
7.1. Air Filter
- Inspect the air filter regularly (e.g., every 10-20 hours of operation or before each use in dusty conditions).
- Clean or replace the air filter if it is dirty or clogged. A dirty air filter can restrict airflow, leading to poor engine performance and increased fuel consumption.
7.2. Fuel Filter
- Inspect the fuel filter periodically (e.g., annually or if fuel delivery issues occur).
- Replace the fuel filter if it appears clogged or discolored to ensure clean fuel reaches the carburetor.
7.3. Spark Plug
- Inspect the spark plug annually or if the engine experiences starting difficulties or runs poorly.
- Replace the spark plug if the electrode is fouled, worn, or damaged. Ensure the gap is set correctly according to your trimmer's specifications.
8. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues after installing the Ferilter T242 Carburetor Kit, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Engine won't start | No fuel, incorrect choke, fouled spark plug, incorrect fuel line connection | Check fuel level, ensure primer bulb is primed, verify choke setting, inspect/replace spark plug, confirm fuel lines are correctly attached. |
| Engine runs rough or stalls | Dirty air filter, old fuel, fuel filter clogged, carburetor not adjusted (unlikely for new replacement) | Clean/replace air filter, use fresh fuel, replace fuel filter. |
| Fuel leaks | Loose fuel line connections, damaged fuel lines/grommet, improperly seated gasket | Check all fuel line connections for tightness, inspect fuel lines and grommet for cracks/damage and replace if necessary, ensure carburetor gasket is properly seated. |
| Lack of power | Dirty air filter, fouled spark plug, incorrect fuel mixture | Clean/replace air filter, replace spark plug, ensure correct fuel/oil mixture. |
