Introduction
This manual provides instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the APC Back-UPS BE700G3 and BE425M Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) units. These devices are designed to provide battery backup power and surge protection for electronic equipment, ensuring continued operation during power outages and safeguarding against voltage fluctuations.
Safety Information
Read these instructions carefully before attempting to install, operate, service, or maintain this equipment. Observe all safety precautions to prevent personal injury and equipment damage.
- Do not install the UPS in direct sunlight, near heat sources, or where there is excessive dust or humidity.
- Connect the UPS power cable directly to a grounded wall outlet. Do not use extension cords or surge protectors with the UPS input.
- Ensure the total current draw of connected equipment does not exceed the UPS's rated capacity.
- The internal battery is not user-replaceable. Refer to qualified service personnel for battery replacement.
- Do not dispose of batteries in a fire as they may explode.

Setup
- Unpack the UPS: Carefully remove the UPS unit and all accessories from its packaging.
- Placement: Position the UPS on a flat, stable surface in a well-ventilated area. Avoid locations with direct sunlight, excessive heat, or moisture.
- Connect to Wall Power: Plug the UPS power cord directly into a grounded 2-pole, 3-wire wall receptacle. Do not use extension cords or surge strips, as this can compromise surge protection and battery backup performance.
- Initial Charge: Allow the UPS to charge for a minimum of 24 hours before connecting critical equipment. This ensures the battery reaches its full capacity for optimal backup runtime.
- Connect Equipment:
- Battery Backup & Surge Protected Outlets: Connect critical equipment such as computers, monitors, routers, and external hard drives to these outlets. These outlets provide power during outages and protection from surges.
- Surge Only Outlets: Connect non-critical equipment like printers, scanners, or speakers to these outlets. These outlets provide surge protection but do not offer battery backup power.
- USB Charging Ports (BE700G3): Use the integrated USB-A and USB-C ports on the BE700G3 model to charge compatible mobile devices.
Operating Instructions
Turning the UPS On/Off
- To Turn On: Press the Power button once. The UPS will emit a short beep, and the status indicator will illuminate.
- To Turn Off: Press and hold the Power button until the UPS beeps twice and the status indicator turns off.
Understanding Indicators and Alarms
The UPS uses visual indicators and audible alarms to communicate its operational status and any potential issues.
| Indicator/Alarm | Description | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Power On/Online LED (Green) | Solid: UPS is on and providing AC power. Flashing: UPS is on battery power. | No action required if solid. If flashing, save work and shut down equipment if outage is prolonged. |
| Battery Low Alarm | Rapid beeping. Indicates battery power is critically low. | Immediately save work and shut down connected equipment to prevent data loss. |
| Overload Alarm | Continuous tone. Indicates connected equipment exceeds UPS capacity. | Disconnect non-essential equipment immediately until the alarm stops. |
| Building Wiring Fault LED (Red, BE700G3) | Solid: Indicates a wiring problem in the building's electrical system (e.g., missing ground, reversed polarity). | Consult a qualified electrician to inspect the building wiring. Do not use the UPS until the wiring issue is resolved. |
Silence Alarms (BE425M)
The BE425M model allows for quick muting of audible alarms. Press the mute button (refer to Figure 4 in Product Overview) to temporarily silence alarms during a power event. This does not affect the UPS's operation or address the underlying issue.
Maintenance
- Battery Care: The internal battery is designed for a specific lifespan. It is not user-serviceable. Contact APC support for battery replacement services when the battery reaches its end of life.
- Cleaning: Keep the UPS free of dust and debris. Use a dry, soft cloth to clean the exterior surfaces. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the unit.
- Storage: If the UPS is to be stored for an extended period, ensure it is fully charged before storage. Recharge the unit for 24 hours every 3-6 months to prevent battery degradation. Store the UPS in a cool, dry place.
Troubleshooting
Refer to the table below for common issues and their solutions. If a problem persists, contact APC customer support.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| UPS does not turn on. | Not connected to AC power; Low battery; Internal fault. | Ensure power cord is securely plugged into a functional wall outlet. Allow UPS to charge for 24 hours. If still unresponsive, contact support. |
| UPS beeps continuously or frequently. | Overload; On battery power; Low battery. | Reduce connected load by unplugging non-essential devices. Save work and shut down equipment if on battery power. Allow battery to recharge. |
| "Building Wiring Fault" LED is lit (BE700G3). | Wiring problem in the building (e.g., missing ground, reversed polarity). | Consult a qualified electrician to inspect the building wiring. Do not use the UPS until the wiring issue is resolved. |
| UPS provides insufficient runtime. | Overloaded; Battery nearing end of life. | Reduce connected load. Contact APC support for battery replacement if the battery is old. |
| No power from surge-only outlets. | Circuit breaker tripped. | Press the circuit breaker reset button on the rear of the UPS. Reduce the load if it trips again. |
