5. Setup & Installation

Follow these steps carefully to replace your water heater element. Refer to the safety information before beginning.

5.1. Preparation

  1. Disconnect Power: Locate your RV's main electrical panel and turn off the circuit breaker supplying power to the water heater. Verify power is off using a voltage tester.
  2. Turn Off Water Supply: Close the water intake valve to the water heater.
  3. Drain Tank: Attach a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the water heater. Open the drain valve. If replacing the upper element, drain half the tank. If replacing the lower element, fully drain the tank. Open a hot water faucet inside your RV to help release water from the tank. Once drained, close the drain valve.
  4. Access Element: Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the mounting screw securing the access cover of the element you are replacing. Remove the cover. Move any insulation out of the way and remove the plastic cover protecting the element terminals.

5.2. Removing the Old Element

  1. Disconnect Wires: Note the orientation of the wires attached to the heating element terminals. Loosen the screws to detach the wires.
  2. Unthread Element: Use a 1 1/2 inch socket or a specialized heating element wrench to unthread the old element by rotating it counter-clockwise. Carefully remove the old element from the tank.

5.3. Installing the New Element

  1. Check Gasket: Before installing the new heating element, confirm that the gasket is properly seated on the element.
  2. Insert and Tighten: Carefully insert the new element into the tank opening. Hand-thread it clockwise until snug, then use the 1 1/2 inch socket or heating element wrench to tighten it securely. Do not overtighten.
  3. Connect Wires: Attach the wires to the appropriate terminals on the new element, ensuring they match the original orientation. Tighten the screws to secure the connections.

5.4. Finalization

  1. Replace Covers: Reposition the plastic cover over the terminals, then replace the insulation and the outer access cover. Secure the outer cover with its mounting screw.
  2. Refill Tank: Open the water intake valve to allow the tank to refill completely. Close any open hot water faucets once water flows steadily. Check for leaks around the new element.
  3. Restore Power: Once the tank is full and there are no leaks, restore power to the water heater at the circuit breaker.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and efficiency of your water heater element and the overall water heater system.

  • Annual Inspection: Annually inspect the heating element for signs of corrosion, mineral buildup, or damage. Replace if necessary.
  • Flush Tank: Periodically flush your water heater tank to remove sediment buildup, which can reduce efficiency and shorten element lifespan.
  • Check Anode Rod: Inspect and replace the anode rod as recommended by your water heater manufacturer. A healthy anode rod protects the tank and elements from corrosion.
  • Electrical Connections: Ensure all electrical connections remain tight and free from corrosion.
