  • Main Unit (AS840 Thickness Gauge)
  • Ultrasonic Probe
  • 4mm Calibration Block
  • Storage Bag

4. Setup

  1. Battery Installation: Open the battery compartment on the back of the device and insert the required batteries, observing polarity.
  2. Probe Connection: Connect the ultrasonic probe to the designated ports on the top of the main unit. Ensure a secure connection.
  3. Power On: Press the power button (usually marked with a power symbol) to turn on the device. The LCD display should illuminate.
  4. Initial Calibration: Before first use or when changing materials, perform a calibration using the provided 4mm calibration block. Place the probe firmly on the block and follow the on-screen instructions or refer to the "Calibration" section in operating instructions.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Basic Measurement

  1. Prepare Surface: Ensure the surface of the material to be measured is clean, smooth, and free of dust, rust, or paint. Apply a small amount of coupling gel (not included) to the surface where the probe will be placed.
  2. Place Probe: Press the probe firmly and perpendicularly onto the prepared surface. Ensure good contact.
  3. Read Measurement: The thickness reading will appear on the LCD display. Hold the probe steady until the reading stabilizes.
  4. Remove Probe: Lift the probe from the surface. The last stable reading will typically remain on the display.
Examples of field measurements: glass, stainless steel, plastic thickness measurement, and 4mm calibration block measurement

5.2 Sound Velocity Measurement

The device can measure the sound velocity of a material if its thickness is known.

  1. Enter Known Thickness: Use the device's buttons (e.g., "VEL" or arrow keys) to navigate to the sound velocity measurement mode and input the known thickness of the material.
  2. Perform Measurement: Place the probe on the material as described in Basic Measurement.
  3. Read Sound Velocity: The device will calculate and display the sound velocity.

Measuring range for sound velocity: 1000 to 9999 m/s. Accuracy: +/-5% when given thickness > 20mm; +/-1mm/H*100% when given thickness < 20mm.

5.3 Data Storage

To store a measurement, press the "STORE" button after a stable reading is obtained. Refer to the device's on-screen menu for recalling stored data.

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the device and probe with a soft, dry cloth after each use. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the device in its provided storage bag in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the display. Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period.
  • Probe Care: Inspect the probe for wear or damage regularly. A damaged probe can affect measurement accuracy.

7. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No display/Device won't turn onDead or incorrectly installed batteriesCheck battery polarity; replace batteries.
Inaccurate readingsPoor probe contact, no coupling gel, uncalibrated, damaged probe, material not suitableEnsure firm, perpendicular contact; apply coupling gel; recalibrate; inspect probe; verify material is an ultrasonic conductor.
"Error" or "---" on displayNo signal, out of range, or unstable readingRe-apply probe with coupling gel; ensure material thickness is within range (1.2 to 225.0mm); hold probe steady.
Device shuts off unexpectedlyLow battery, automatic shut-down activatedReplace batteries; device has automatic shut-down feature to conserve power.
