5.2 Attaching the Lens Hood

The included lens hood (LH1030-01) helps to block extraneous light, reducing flare and ghosting, and also protects the front element of the lens.

  1. Align the red dot on the lens hood with the red dot on the front of the lens.
  2. Push the hood onto the lens and rotate it clockwise until it locks securely.
  3. To remove, press the release button on the hood and rotate counter-clockwise.

5.3 Using the Tripod Collar

The integrated tripod collar (TS-121) provides a balanced mounting point for the lens and camera when using a tripod or monopod, reducing strain on the camera's lens mount. It also allows for smooth rotation between horizontal and vertical orientations.

  • To attach to a tripod, screw the tripod plate directly into the 1/4-inch thread on the tripod collar foot.
  • To rotate the lens, loosen the locking knob on the tripod collar, rotate the lens to the desired orientation, and then tighten the knob securely.

6. Operating the Lens

6.1 Focus Mode Switch (AF/MF)

This switch controls the focusing method.

  • AF (Autofocus): The camera automatically focuses on the subject.
  • MF (Manual Focus): Focus is adjusted manually by rotating the focus ring.

6.2 Optical Stabilizer (OS) Switch

The Optical Stabilizer function reduces camera shake, especially useful in low light or when shooting handheld at slower shutter speeds.

  • OFF: Optical Stabilizer is disabled.
  • MODE 1: General-purpose stabilization, effective for static subjects.
  • MODE 2: Designed for panning shots, stabilizing vertical movement while allowing horizontal movement.

6.3 Custom Mode Switch (C1/C2/OFF)

This switch allows you to select between two custom settings (C1, C2) or disable them (OFF). Custom settings can be configured using the optional SIGMA USB DOCK and SIGMA Optimization Pro software, allowing adjustments to AF speed, OS behavior, and focus limiter range.

6.4 Focus Limiter Switch

This switch restricts the autofocus range, which can improve autofocus speed when the subject's distance is known.

  • FULL: Autofocus operates across the entire focusing range.
  • LIMIT: Autofocus operates within a specified limited range (e.g., from a certain distance to infinity). The specific range can often be customized via the SIGMA USB DOCK.

6.5 AFL Button

The AFL (Autofocus Lock) button is a customizable function button. Its function can be assigned through your camera's menu system or via the SIGMA USB DOCK. Common assignments include autofocus lock, depth-of-field preview, or switching between focus modes.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning

  • Lens Elements: Use a blower brush to remove dust, then gently wipe with a clean, soft microfiber cloth specifically designed for optical lenses. For stubborn smudges, use a small amount of lens cleaning fluid applied to the cloth, not directly to the lens.
  • Lens Body: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. For dirt, slightly dampen the cloth with water and wipe, then dry thoroughly. Avoid using organic solvents like thinner or benzene.
  • Mount Contacts: Keep the electronic contacts on the lens mount clean. Use a dry, clean cotton swab or microfiber cloth. Do not touch them with your fingers.

7.2 Storage

  • Store the lens with both front and rear caps attached in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and high humidity.
  • If storing for an extended period, consider using a desiccant to prevent mold and mildew.
  • Avoid storing the lens near mothballs or chemicals that can emit volatile gases.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your lens, refer to the following common solutions before contacting service.

  • Lens not recognized by camera:
    • Ensure the lens is securely attached to the camera body.
    • Turn off the camera, detach the lens, clean the electronic contacts on both the lens and camera with a dry, clean cloth, then reattach the lens and turn the camera on.
    • Check if your camera's firmware is up to date.
  • Autofocus not working:
    • Verify the Focus Mode Switch on the lens is set to "AF".
    • Check your camera's focus settings.
    • Ensure there is sufficient light and contrast for the autofocus system to operate.
    • If the Focus Limiter is engaged, try setting it to "FULL".
  • Images are blurry or shaky:
    • Ensure the Optical Stabilizer (OS) switch is set to MODE 1 or MODE 2 when shooting handheld.
    • Check your shutter speed; use a faster shutter speed if motion blur is present.
    • Verify that the lens elements are clean.
  • Lens controls (switches, buttons) unresponsive:
    • Turn the camera off and on again.
    • Detach and reattach the lens.

If the problem persists after trying these steps, please contact Sigma customer support or an authorized service center.
