2. Surface Mounting / DIY Creatives

For a more permanent installation or to integrate the feeder into a custom setup, the feeder features multiple screw holes on all six sides. This allows for direct mounting onto surfaces such as:

  • Tree trunks
  • Wooden fences or walls
  • Birdhouses or other bird feeders

You can also use these screw holes to design and create your own unique suet feeder configurations, potentially incorporating wood boards or other materials.

  1. Locate the lock bolt on the side of the feeder.
  2. Unscrew the lock bolt to release the door.
  3. Open the door and insert the suet cake or bread.

2. Attracting Wild Birds

The open grid design allows birds to easily see the food, attracting a variety of clinging birds such as woodpeckers, titmice, nuthatches, and chickadees. The tight grid also helps deter squirrels from accessing the suet.

Beyond suet cakes, the feeder can be used for:

  • Small seed cakes
  • Nesting material in spring
  • Orange halves in summer

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity of your feeder and the health of visiting birds, regular maintenance is recommended.

Cleaning

The feeder's metal construction and black powder coating make it easy to clean. Periodically wipe down the feeder with a damp cloth to remove any residue or debris. For a more thorough cleaning, use a mild soap solution and rinse thoroughly before refilling.

Durability

The feeder is made of molded metal and coated with black powder, ensuring sturdy and durable use without rust or deformation.

Troubleshooting

  • Difficulty with Lock Bolt: The hole for the lock bolt is small. Please align and screw on the lock bolt carefully to ensure secure closure and prevent damage.
  • Suet Cake Movement: If the suet cake has too much room to move, it might be difficult for birds to access. Ensure the suet cake fits snugly within the cage.
  • Squirrel Access: While designed to deter squirrels, persistent squirrels may still attempt to access the feeder. Consider placement in an area less accessible to squirrels or use additional squirrel baffles if necessary.
