Safety Precautions
Always prioritize safety when operating this equipment. Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or property damage.
- Read the Manual: Always read and understand the entire instruction manual before operating the plate compactor.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear appropriate safety gear, including hand protection (gloves), eye protection (safety glasses), and hearing protection (ear defenders).
- Fuel Handling:
- Use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 86 or higher.
- Maximum fuel capacity is 0.95 gallons.
- Refuel in a well-ventilated area with the engine off and cool.
- Do not smoke or allow open flames near the compactor during refueling.
- Engine Oil:
- Use SAE 10W-30 engine oil.
- Maximum oil capacity is 0.16 gallons.
- Engine oil is not included with the purchase and must be added before first use.
- Pre-Operation Checks:
- Before each use, check for loose nuts, bolts, and fasteners. Tighten as necessary.
- Ensure all guards and safety devices are in place and functioning correctly.
- Operating Environment:
- Operate the compactor on stable ground.
- Keep bystanders, especially children and pets, away from the operating area.
- Avoid operating in enclosed spaces due to exhaust fumes.

Setup
Upon receiving your BILT HARD Plate Compactor, some assembly may be required. Refer to the included assembly guide for detailed instructions on attaching the handle, transport wheels, and other components.
Initial Fuel and Oil Filling
- Ensure the compactor is on a level surface and the engine is off and cool.
- Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick and add 0.16 gallons (approximately 0.6 liters) of SAE 10W-30 engine oil. Do not overfill.
- Securely replace the oil fill cap/dipstick.
- Remove the fuel cap and carefully fill the fuel tank with up to 0.95 gallons (approximately 3.6 liters) of 86+ octane unleaded gasoline.
- Securely replace the fuel cap. Wipe up any spilled fuel immediately.
Transport Wheels
The compactor is equipped with folding transport wheels for easy maneuverability around the job site and for storage. To engage or disengage the wheels, follow the instructions in your assembly guide.

Operating Instructions
Starting the Engine (Cold or Warm)
- Move the Fuel Valve Lever to the ON position.
- To start a COLD engine, move the Choke to the CLOSE position. To restart a WARM engine, leave the choke lever in the OPEN position.
- Move the Throttle Lever away from the SLOW position, approximately 1/3 of the way toward the FAST position.
- Turn the Engine Switch to the ON position.
- Pull the Recoil Starter firmly and smoothly until the engine starts.
- Once the engine starts, gradually move the Choke lever to the OPEN position.

Compaction Process
- After starting the engine, allow it to warm up for a few moments.
- Adjust the throttle to the desired operating speed using the linear throttle control. This allows for precise RPM control.
- Guide the compactor over the area to be compacted. The self-propelled design assists in movement.
- Overlap passes slightly to ensure uniform compaction.
- The compactor is effective on loose dirt, soil, gravel, sand, and asphalt, achieving a compaction depth of up to 10 inches.
- The shock-absorbing design helps reduce operator fatigue during extended use.

Stopping the Engine
- Reduce the throttle to the SLOW position.
- Turn the Engine Switch to the OFF position.
- Move the Fuel Valve Lever to the OFF position to prevent fuel flow.
- Allow the engine to cool before storage or transport.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of your plate compactor.
- General Inspection: Before each use, inspect the compactor for any visible damage, loose parts, or leaks.
- Fastener Checks: Periodically check all nuts, bolts, and fasteners for tightness. Tighten any loose components to prevent vibration-induced damage.
- Engine Oil Level: Check the engine oil level before each use. Add SAE 10W-30 oil if necessary. Refer to the engine manual for specific oil change intervals.
- Air Filter: Inspect and clean the air filter regularly, especially when operating in dusty conditions. Replace if damaged.
- Spark Plug: Inspect the spark plug periodically and clean or replace it as needed to ensure reliable starting and engine performance.
- Fuel System: Keep the fuel tank clean and free of debris. Drain the fuel system if storing the compactor for an extended period.
- Cleaning: Clean the compactor after each use, removing dirt and debris from the plate and engine area.
