1. Introduction

The Skyking WORK-ZONE IR-950 is a high-performance industrial infrared thermometer designed for non-contact temperature measurement. It is ideal for use in various industrial applications such as furnaces, kilns, forging, casting, and HVAC systems, where high temperatures need to be measured safely and accurately. This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your device.

2. Safety Information

Please read and understand all safety warnings and operating instructions before using this instrument. Failure to do so may result in injury or damage to the device.

  • CAUTION: This device is NOT FOR HUMAN temperature measurement. It is designed for industrial applications only.
  • Do not point the laser directly at eyes or indirectly off reflective surfaces. Laser radiation can cause eye damage.
  • Do not use the thermometer near explosive gas, steam, or dust.
  • Avoid exposing the device to extreme temperatures, humidity, or direct sunlight for prolonged periods.
  • Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the instrument. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.
  • Keep the device out of reach of children.

4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the handle of the thermometer.
  2. Open the battery compartment cover.
  3. Insert two 1.5V AA batteries (or No.7 batteries) according to the polarity indicators (+ and -) inside the compartment.
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

4.2 Initial Power On

After installing the batteries, press the trigger to power on the device. The LCD display will illuminate, showing the current temperature and other indicators.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Taking a Measurement

  1. Point the thermometer at the target surface. Ensure the target is larger than the spot size indicated by the D:S ratio (see Section 5.2).
  2. Press and hold the trigger. The laser pointer(s) will activate, indicating the measurement area.
  3. The measured temperature will be displayed on the LCD screen within 0.25 seconds.
  4. Release the trigger to hold the reading on the display. The device will automatically shut down after approximately 7 seconds of inactivity to conserve battery.

5.2 Distance to Spot Ratio (D:S)

The IR-950 has a Distance to Spot Ratio (D:S) of 12:1. This means that at a distance of 12 units from the target, the measurement spot diameter will be 1 unit. For accurate readings, ensure the target area is completely within the measurement spot. Measuring closer to the target will result in a smaller spot size and more precise measurement of a specific area.

5.3 Adjustable Emissivity

Emissivity (ε) is a measure of an object's ability to emit infrared energy. Different materials have different emissivity values. The IR-950 allows you to adjust the emissivity from 0.10 to 1.00 (preset to 0.95) to ensure accurate readings for various surfaces. Consult an emissivity table for common materials or adjust empirically for best results.

  • Press the MODE button to cycle through settings until 'Emissivity' is displayed.
  • Use the UP/DOWN buttons (often combined with laser/backlight buttons) to adjust the value.
  • Press MODE again to confirm and exit.

5.4 MAX/MIN Display

The thermometer can display the maximum (MAX) or minimum (MIN) temperature recorded during a continuous measurement session. This feature is useful for monitoring temperature fluctuations.

  • While holding the trigger, press the MODE button to cycle through display modes (e.g., current, MAX, MIN).
  • The corresponding value will be shown on the display.

5.5 Unit Conversion (°C/°F)

To switch between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F) temperature units:

  • With the device powered on, press the dedicated °C/°F button, or cycle through the MODE button until the unit option appears, then use the UP/DOWN buttons to select.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning

  • The lens is the most delicate part of the thermometer. Clean it with a soft, damp cloth or cotton swab. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Clean the instrument casing with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not immerse the device in water.

6.2 Storage

  • Store the thermometer in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.

7. Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Device does not power on. Dead or incorrectly installed batteries. Replace batteries or ensure correct polarity.
Inaccurate readings. Incorrect emissivity setting, target too small, or lens dirty. Adjust emissivity, ensure target is within spot size, clean the lens.
"Hi" or "Lo" displayed. Temperature exceeds measurement range. Ensure the measured temperature is within the device's specified range (-50 to 950°C).
"AH" or "AL" displayed. Ambient temperature exceeds working environment limits. Operate the device within the specified working environment temperature (0°C~40°C).
Low power indicator (blank display). Battery voltage is below 2.5V. Replace batteries.
