2. Safety Information

4. Product Overview

5. Setup
5.1 Battery Installation and Charging
The M-5R comes with a high-capacity 3800mAh battery, a significant upgrade from previous models. This battery also supports USB charging (cable not included).
- Align the battery pack with the grooves on the back of the radio.
- Slide the battery upwards until it clicks into place.
- To charge, place the radio with the battery installed into the desktop charger. Ensure the charging contacts align. The charger indicator will show charging status.
- Alternatively, connect a USB charging cable (not supplied) to the USB jack on the battery pack for direct charging.

5.2 Antenna Attachment
Screw the desired antenna (either the standard or the longer 771 antenna) clockwise onto the antenna connector at the top of the radio until it is finger-tight. Do not overtighten.
5.3 Programming Guide
The BAOFENG M-5R can be programmed using CHIRP software. This video provides a step-by-step guide on how to connect your radio to a computer and use the software for programming.

6. Operating Instructions
6.1 Power On/Off and Volume
Rotate the top knob clockwise to turn the radio ON and increase volume. Rotate counter-clockwise to decrease volume and turn OFF.
6.2 Channel Selection (VFO/MR Mode)
- Press the VFO/MR button to switch between Frequency Mode (VFO) and Channel Mode (MR).
- In VFO mode, enter frequencies directly using the keypad.
- In MR mode, use the UP/DOWN arrow keys or the keypad to select a stored channel.
6.3 Transmit and Receive
- To transmit, press and hold the PTT (Push-To-Talk) button on the left side of the radio and speak into the microphone. Release to receive.
- Ensure the antenna is properly attached before transmitting to prevent damage.
6.4 Copy Frequency Function
The M-5R features a wireless frequency copy function, allowing you to quickly capture and save frequencies from another radio.
- Turn on the device and long press the BAND button. (Tip: Press the '#' key to switch between UHF and VHF).
- If the transmitter continues to transmit and the unit receives an effective frequency (the strongest and stable signal), the received frequency will be displayed.
- Press the MENU key to save the searched frequency and CTCSS or DCS to a channel.

6.5 Multi-Band and AirBand Reception
The M-5R supports a wide range of frequencies, including FM broadcast radio (68-108MHz), AM AirBand (108-136MHz), and various VHF/UHF bands (136-174MHz, 220-260MHz, 350-390MHz, 400-520MHz).

6.6 VOX Function
The Voice Operated Exchange (VOX) function allows for hands-free operation. When activated, the radio will automatically transmit when it detects your voice.

6.7 Flashlight
The M-5R includes a built-in LED flashlight for convenience in low-light conditions. Refer to the labeled parts diagram (Figure 4.1) for its location.

7. Maintenance
- Clean the radio surface with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- Ensure the battery contacts are clean and free of debris.
- Store the radio in a cool, dry place when not in use, especially for extended periods.
- For optimal battery life, fully charge the battery before first use and avoid over-discharging.
