Safety Information

Please read and understand all safety precautions before operating the device. Failure to do so may result in injury or damage to the device.

  • Do not look directly into the VFL output port or into a fiber connected to the VFL. The 650nm laser light can cause eye damage.
  • Use only the specified battery type (2*AA 1.5V Alkaline Battery).
  • Keep the device away from water and extreme temperatures.
  • Do not attempt to disassemble or repair the device yourself. Contact qualified personnel for service.

Setup

1. Battery Installation

The TM501 requires two (2) AA 1.5V alkaline batteries (not included). To install:

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
  2. Slide or unclip the cover to open.
  3. Insert two AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

The device features a low battery monitoring function. The LED screen will flash to indicate when batteries need replacement.

Operating Instructions

1. Powering On/Off

Press and hold the power button () located on the front panel to turn the device on or off.

2. Live Fiber Optical Identifier (OFI) Function

The OFI function uses macro bending technology for non-destructive testing, allowing identification of traffic direction and frequency tone without interrupting service.

  1. Ensure the fiber is clean and free of debris.
  2. Locate the fiber clamping mechanism at the top of the device.
  3. Press the switch on the back of the device with your index finger to open the clamp.
  4. Carefully place the optical fiber into the clamp. The device supports 0.25mm, 0.9mm, 2.0mm, and 3.0mm optical fibers.
  5. Release the switch to secure the fiber. The test will automatically begin.
  6. The display will show the relative core power, signal direction, and indicate if the fiber is live or dark.
  7. Identified signal types include 270Hz, 1KHz, and 2KHz.

3. Optical Power Meter (OPM) Function

The built-in OPM measures optical power levels.

  1. Locate the OPM port on the side of the device.
  2. Connect the optical fiber to be measured to the 2.5 universal connector.
  3. Press the "dBm/W" button to switch between dBm and Watt units.
  4. Press the "Lambda" button to cycle through calibration wavelengths (850/1300/1310/1490/1550/1625nm) to match your signal.
  5. The measured power will be displayed on the screen.

4. Visual Fault Locator (VFL) Function

The VFL emits a visible red laser light (650nm) to locate breaks, bends, and poor connections in optical fibers.

  1. Locate the VFL port on the side of the device.
  2. Connect the optical fiber to the FC/PC port.
  3. Press the "VFL" button to activate the VFL.
  4. Observe the fiber for any visible red light leakage, which indicates a fault.
  5. Press the "VFL" button again to turn off the VFL.
Warning: Never look directly into the VFL output or into a fiber connected to the VFL. The laser light can cause severe eye damage.Side view of the TM501 showing the OPM and VFL ports

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the device. For optical ports, use specialized fiber optic cleaning tools and solutions to prevent damage and ensure accurate readings.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace batteries promptly when the low battery indicator flashes on the screen. Remove batteries if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
  • Storage: Store the device in its carrying bag in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Avoid Contamination: Keep dust caps on all optical ports when not in use to prevent contamination.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Device does not power on.Dead or incorrectly installed batteries.Check battery polarity; replace with new AA batteries.
Inaccurate OFI/OPM readings.Dirty fiber end-faces or optical ports; incorrect OPM wavelength setting.Clean fiber end-faces and device ports. Ensure OPM wavelength matches the signal.
VFL light is dim or not visible.Low battery; dirty VFL port; damaged fiber.Replace batteries. Clean VFL port. Inspect fiber for damage.
Fiber not securely clamped by OFI.Incorrect fiber size; clamp mechanism obstruction.Ensure fiber diameter is within supported range (0.25mm, 0.9mm, 2.0mm, 3.0mm). Check for debris in the clamp.
