Setup

Initial Power On and Account Setup

  1. Charge the Device: Before first use, connect the included power adapter to the Steam Deck OLED and a power outlet. Allow the device to charge fully. The charging indicator light will change when complete.
  2. Power On: Press and hold the power button located on the top edge of the device until the Valve logo appears.
  3. Language and Region Selection: Follow the on-screen prompts to select your preferred language and region.
  4. Connect to Wi-Fi: Select your Wi-Fi network from the list and enter the password. The Steam Deck OLED supports Wi-Fi 6E for faster connections.
  5. Sign In to Steam: Enter your Steam account credentials. If you do not have a Steam account, you will be prompted to create one.
  6. System Updates: The device may require a system update upon initial setup. Allow the update to download and install completely. This may require a restart.

Operating the Steam Deck OLED

Navigating the Interface

The Steam Deck OLED operates primarily in Gaming Mode, optimized for a console-like experience. You can also switch to Desktop Mode for more advanced functionalities.

  • Gaming Mode: This is the default interface for browsing your game library, the Steam Store, and managing game installations. Use the analog sticks and D-pad for navigation, and the A/B/X/Y buttons for selection and actions.
  • Steam Button: Press the Steam button (located on the left side below the left trackpad) to access the Steam menu, which includes options for Library, Store, Friends, Media, Settings, and Power.
  • Quick Access Button: Press the Quick Access button (located on the right side below the right trackpad) to open the Quick Access menu, providing shortcuts to notifications, performance settings, battery information, and more.
  • Touchscreen: The 7.4-inch OLED touchscreen allows for intuitive navigation and interaction with the interface.
  • Trackpads: The two haptic trackpads can be used for precise cursor control, especially in Desktop Mode, or configured for specific game inputs.

Installing and Playing Games

  1. From Your Library: In Gaming Mode, navigate to your Library. Select a game you own and choose "Install" if it's not already installed. Once installed, select "Play" to launch the game.
  2. From the Store: Access the Steam Store from the Steam menu. Browse or search for games. Purchase and install games directly from the store.
  3. MicroSD Card: Insert a formatted microSD card into the slot on the bottom edge of the device to expand storage. You can install games directly to the microSD card.

Switching Between Gaming and Desktop Mode

To switch to Desktop Mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power Button on the top edge of the device for a few seconds until a menu appears.
  2. Select "Switch to Desktop" from the options. The device will transition to a Linux-based desktop environment.

To return to Gaming Mode from Desktop Mode:

  • Double-click the "Return to Gaming Mode" icon on the desktop.
  • Alternatively, you can restart the device, and it will typically boot back into Gaming Mode.

Maintenance

Cleaning

  • Screen: Use a soft, lint-free cloth, slightly dampened with water or a screen-safe cleaning solution, to gently wipe the OLED display. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
  • Body: Wipe the console's body with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn marks, a slightly damp cloth can be used. Ensure no liquid enters ports or vents.
  • Vents: Periodically check the air vents for dust accumulation. Use a can of compressed air to gently clear any debris, holding the can upright to prevent propellant discharge.

Storage

When not in use, store your Steam Deck OLED in its included carrying case to protect it from dust, scratches, and minor impacts. Avoid storing in extreme temperatures or direct sunlight.
