Jemay GS811-A

Jemay Carbon Monoxide Detector (Model GS811-A) User Manual

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of your Jemay Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detector, Model GS811-A. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the device and retain it for future reference. This detector is designed to monitor carbon monoxide levels and provide an audible and visual alarm in the event of dangerous concentrations, helping to protect you and your family from the risks of CO poisoning.

2. Important Safety Information

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that can be fatal. This detector is designed to alert you to the presence of CO, but it is not a substitute for proper maintenance of fuel-burning appliances or adequate ventilation. Always follow these safety guidelines:

  • Never ignore an alarm. Investigate the source of the CO immediately.
  • Do not use this device as a substitute for a smoke detector. It detects carbon monoxide only.
  • Test the detector regularly as described in this manual.
  • Ensure proper ventilation in areas with fuel-burning appliances.
  • Replace the detector at the end of its 10-year lifespan.

3. Product Overview

The Jemay Carbon Monoxide Detector (Model GS811-A) is a battery-powered device featuring a digital display and LED indicators for clear status updates. It is designed for reliable CO detection in various environments.

3.1 Components and Features

  • Digital LCD Display: Shows real-time CO concentration in PPM, battery status, and error messages.
  • LED Indicators: Green (Power), Yellow (Fault/Low Battery), Red (Alarm).
  • TEST/SILENCE Button: Used for testing the alarm and silencing temporary alarms.
  • Electrochemical Sensor: Provides accurate and responsive CO detection.

4. Setup and Installation

4.1 Battery Installation

The detector requires 2 AA alkaline batteries (not included) for operation. Ensure correct polarity when inserting the batteries.

  1. Open the battery compartment cover on the back of the detector.
  2. Insert two AA alkaline batteries, matching the (+) and (-) terminals correctly.
  3. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

4.2 Placement Guidelines

For optimal performance and safety, consider the following placement recommendations:

  • General Placement: Install at least one detector on each level of your home, especially near sleeping areas.
  • Height: Since carbon monoxide is slightly lighter than air, place the detector at least 5 feet (1.5 meters) above the floor.
  • Avoid: Do not place near windows, doors, or vents where drafts could affect readings. Avoid areas with high humidity, direct sunlight, or extreme temperatures. Keep away from fuel-burning appliances to prevent nuisance alarms.

4.3 Mounting Options

The detector offers flexible installation:

  • Wall Mounting: Use the provided screws and anchors to securely mount the detector to a wall.
  • Free Placement: The detector can be placed on a flat surface, such as a table or shelf, for quick setup without tools.

5. Operation

5.1 Initial Power-Up

After battery installation, the detector will perform a self-test. The digital display will show a countdown, and the LED indicators will cycle. Once complete, the green LED will flash periodically, and the display will show '0 PPM' or the current low CO level.

5.2 Normal Operation

In normal operation, the green LED flashes approximately every 30 seconds, indicating the unit is functioning correctly. The digital display shows the current CO concentration in parts per million (PPM).

5.3 TEST/SILENCE Button

  • Test Function: Press and hold the TEST/SILENCE button for a few seconds to test the alarm. The alarm will sound, and the red LED will flash. Release the button to stop the test.
  • Silence Function: During an alarm, press the TEST/SILENCE button to temporarily silence the audible alarm for approximately 10 minutes. The visual alarm (red LED) will continue to flash. For low-battery or fault alerts, the mute period can extend up to 10 hours.

5.4 Alarm Memory

In standby mode, a short press of the TEST/SILENCE button will display the highest CO concentration detected since the last alarm or reset for 4 seconds. This feature helps track past CO events.

6. Alarm Conditions and Response

The detector is designed to alarm at specific CO concentration levels and durations:

CO ConcentrationAlarm Response Time
30 PPMNo alarm before 120 minutes
50 PPMAlarm between 60 to 90 minutes
100 PPMAlarm between 10 to 40 minutes
300 PPMAlarm within 3 minutes

6.1 What to do if the Alarm Sounds

If the CO alarm sounds, follow these steps immediately:

  1. Evacuate: Move immediately to fresh air outdoors or open all doors and windows to ventilate the area.
  2. Call Emergency Services: From a fresh air location, call your emergency services (e.g., 911 or your local fire department).
  3. Identify Source: Do not re-enter the premises until the emergency responders have arrived, the area has been aired out, and the source of the CO has been identified and corrected.
  4. Medical Attention: Seek medical attention for anyone experiencing symptoms of CO poisoning (headache, nausea, dizziness).

7. Maintenance

7.1 Testing the Detector

Test your CO detector weekly by pressing and holding the TEST/SILENCE button until the alarm sounds. This confirms the alarm and electronics are functioning.

7.2 Cleaning

Clean the detector regularly to prevent dust buildup from interfering with its operation. Use a soft, damp cloth to wipe the exterior. Do not use cleaning agents or solvents. Do not paint the detector.

7.3 Battery Replacement

The detector is designed for a 10-year battery lifespan. When the batteries are low, the yellow LED will flash, and the LCD will show a low-battery icon. Replace the batteries promptly following the instructions in Section 4.1.

7.4 End-of-Life Indication

After approximately 10 years of operation, the detector will indicate its end-of-life by displaying 'End' on the LCD and possibly a specific audible signal. At this point, the entire unit must be replaced.

8. Troubleshooting
