Important Safety Instructions
- Read all instructions before using this appliance.
- Do not operate any appliance if it has a damaged cord or plug, or if it is malfunctioning or has been dropped or damaged in any manner.
- To avoid the possibility of the appliance plug or receptacle getting wet, position the aquarium stand and tank to one side of a wall-mounted receptacle to prevent water from dripping onto the receptacle or plug. A "drip loop" should be arranged by the user for each cord connecting an aquarium appliance to a receptacle. The "drip loop" is the part of the cord below the level of the receptacle, or the connector if an extension cord is used, to prevent water from traveling along the cord and coming into contact with the receptacle. If the plug or receptacle does get wet, DO NOT unplug the cord. Disconnect the fuse or circuit breaker that supplies power to the appliance. Then unplug and examine for the presence of water in the receptacle.
- Close supervision is necessary when any appliance is used by or near children.
- To avoid injury, do not contact moving parts or hot parts.
- Always unplug an appliance from an outlet when not in use, before putting on or taking off parts, and before cleaning. Never yank cord to pull plug from outlet. Grasp the plug and pull to disconnect.
- Do not use the appliance for other than intended use. The use of attachments not recommended or sold by the appliance manufacturer may cause an unsafe condition.
- Do not install or store the appliance where it will be exposed to the weather or to temperatures below freezing.
- Ensure the filter is placed on a flat, stable surface, below the water level of the aquarium, as indicated in the setup diagrams.

Setup Instructions
- Prepare the Filter Media: Open the filter unit and arrange the provided filter media into the baskets. Typically, mechanical filtration (sponges) goes at the bottom, followed by biological media (ceramic rings), and then chemical media (activated carbon) at the top. Rinse all media thoroughly with clean water before placing them in the filter.
- Connect Hoses: Attach the inlet and outlet hoses to the corresponding connectors on the filter head. Ensure a secure fit to prevent leaks.
- Install Inlet/Outlet Pipes: Place the inlet pipe (with strainer) and outlet pipe (with spray bar or other attachment) inside your aquarium. Secure them to the tank wall using the provided suction cups. Ensure the inlet strainer is submerged and the outlet is positioned to create good water circulation.
- Position the Filter: Place the canister filter on a flat, stable surface below the aquarium's water level. The manufacturer recommends placing the canister filter 27-39 inches (70-100 cm) below the water level for optimal performance.
- Prime the Filter:
- Ensure all connections are tight.
- Open the inlet and outlet valves (if present) on the filter head.
- The filter is designed to self-prime. After energizing, the air in the pump will be discharged. To assist priming, lift and pull the exhaust valve (air evacuation valve) 2-4 times. This action will supply water to the pump through the siphon principle, and the filter will then enter normal working condition without needing extra water added manually.
- Connect to Power: Once the filter is primed and water is flowing, plug the power cord into a suitable electrical outlet.

Operating Instructions
Starting the Filter
After completing the setup and priming process, the filter should start automatically once plugged in. You should observe water flowing from the outlet pipe into your aquarium.
Adjusting Flow Rate
The Sobo AQ-903F filter features an adjustable flow rate. You can regulate the water flow by turning the designated knob or lever on the filter head or inlet/outlet assembly. Adjust the flow to suit the needs of your aquarium inhabitants and tank size. The AQ-903F model has a flow rate of 1000 L/H and is recommended for use in aquariums up to 55 gallons.
Water Outlet Modes
The filter typically comes with various water outlet attachments to provide different water flow patterns and oxygenation levels:
- Platypus Out of Water Mode: Creates a gentle surface agitation.
- Micro-Oxygenation Mode: Introduces fine bubbles for increased oxygenation.
- Rain Shower Mode: Disperses water gently, mimicking rainfall.
- Multi-Directional Infusion Mode: Allows for customizable water direction.
Select the mode that best suits your aquarium's needs and aesthetic preferences.

Ultra-Quiet Operation
The Sobo AQ Series filters are designed for ultra-quiet operation, with noise levels typically below 30dB. This is achieved through a built-in copper brushless motor and a design that minimizes air within the filter system.

Image: A graphic comparing the sound level of the filter (below 30dB) to common household sounds like a ticking clock (40-60dB) and conversation (60-80dB), emphasizing its quiet performance.
Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of your filter, as well as the health of your aquarium inhabitants.
Cleaning the Filter
- Disconnect Power: Always unplug the filter from the power outlet before performing any maintenance.
- Stop Water Flow: Close the inlet and outlet valves on the filter head to prevent water from flowing out of the aquarium.
- Remove Filter Head: Disconnect the hoses from the filter head and unclip the filter head from the canister body.
- Clean Media: Remove the filter media baskets. Rinse mechanical media (sponges) thoroughly in old aquarium water (from a water change) to preserve beneficial bacteria. Replace chemical media (activated carbon) every 2-4 weeks, or as recommended by the media manufacturer. Biological media (ceramic rings) should only be gently rinsed in old aquarium water if heavily clogged, to avoid disturbing bacterial colonies.
- Clean Impeller: Inspect and clean the impeller and impeller housing in the filter head. Remove any debris or buildup that could impede its operation.
- Reassemble: Reassemble the filter in reverse order, ensuring all seals and connections are properly seated.
- Restart: Follow the priming steps in the "Setup Instructions" section to restart the filter.
