1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the TOCiTAA Electric Pruning Shears with Pole. This tool is designed to provide efficient and effortless pruning for various gardening tasks, from small branches to high-reaching limbs. This manual provides essential information for safe operation, proper maintenance, and optimal performance of your new pruning shears. Please read it thoroughly before first use and keep it for future reference.

2. Safety Instructions

WARNING: Failure to follow these safety instructions may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious injury.

  • Work Area Safety: Keep the work area clean and well-lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust.
  • Electrical Safety: Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges, and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
  • Personal Safety: Always wear eye protection and appropriate protective clothing, including gloves, when operating the pruning shears. Stay alert, watch what you are doing, and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use the tool while tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication.
  • Tool Use and Care: Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. It will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed. Disconnect the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools.
  • Blade Safety: The blades are extremely sharp. Keep hands and body parts away from the cutting blades. Never attempt to clear jammed material or adjust the blades while the tool is connected to the battery. Always ensure the tool is off and the battery is removed before any maintenance or inspection.
  • Battery Use and Care: Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer. Use power tools only with specifically designated battery packs. When the battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other metal objects that can make a connection from one terminal to another.
  • Extension Pole Safety: When using the extension pole, be aware of overhead power lines and other obstructions. Maintain a firm grip on the pole and ensure it is securely assembled before use.

5. Setup

5.1. Charging the Battery

Before first use, fully charge both 2.0Ah Lithium-Ion batteries using the provided charger. Insert the battery into the charger and plug the charger into a standard power outlet. The indicator light on the charger will show the charging status. Once fully charged, remove the battery from the charger.

5.2. Installing the Battery

Ensure the pruning shears are turned off before installing the battery.

  1. Align the battery pack with the battery slot on the bottom of the pruning shears handle.
  2. Slide the battery into the slot until it clicks securely into place. Ensure it is firmly seated to prevent accidental disconnection during operation.

6.2. Adjusting Cutting Diameter (4 Gears)

The pruning shears feature 4 adjustable cutting diameter settings to optimize for different branch sizes and conserve battery life.

  1. With the tool powered on and blades activated, locate the adjustment button or mechanism (often integrated with the digital display).
  2. Press the adjustment button to cycle through the 4 gear settings. The digital display will show the current setting.
  3. The settings correspond to different blade openings: Gear 1 (smallest, e.g., 22mm), Gear 2 (e.g., 34mm), Gear 3 (e.g., 41mm), and Gear 4 (largest, e.g., 61mm, for up to 2-inch cuts).
  4. After selecting a new gear, activate the jaws once by pressing the trigger to set the new opening width.

6.3. Pruning

Once the blades are activated and the desired cutting diameter is set:

  1. Position the open blades around the branch you wish to cut. Ensure the branch fits comfortably within the blade opening without forcing.
  2. Press the trigger to close the blades and make the cut. Release the trigger to open the blades for the next cut.
  3. For safety, always keep your free hand away from the cutting area. Treat the tool like a loaded pistol; only place your finger on the trigger when ready to cut.
  4. Avoid attempting to cut branches thicker than the maximum recommended diameter (2 inches or 50mm) to prevent damage to the tool and ensure clean cuts.

7. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your pruning shears.

7.1. Cleaning the Blades

After each use, especially after cutting sap-producing plants, clean the blades.

  1. IMPORTANT: Always remove the battery before cleaning or performing any maintenance.
  2. Open the jaws to their widest setting.
  3. Use a clean cloth and a light lubricating oil (e.g., machine oil, WD-40) to wipe down the blades. This removes sap, debris, and prevents rust.
  4. If pruning diseased wood, sanitize the blades with rubbing alcohol or a bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water) between plants to prevent disease spread. Ensure blades are dry before applying oil.
  5. Once cleaned and lubricated, reinsert the battery, power on the tool, and cycle the blades a few times to distribute the lubricant.

7.2. Sharpening the Blades

The included sharpening stone can be used to maintain blade sharpness.

  1. IMPORTANT: Always remove the battery before sharpening.
  2. Open the blades to their widest position.
  3. Carefully use the sharpening stone to sharpen the cutting edge of the blade. Follow the original bevel angle of the blade.
  4. Sharpen only the beveled side of the blade. Do not sharpen the flat side.
  5. After sharpening, clean and lubricate the blades as described above.

7.3. Blade Replacement

Replacement blades are included in your package. Refer to the diagram below for the location of the blade and securing bolts.

  1. IMPORTANT: Always remove the battery before attempting blade replacement.
  2. Using the provided wrenches, loosen and remove the bolts securing the old blade.
  3. Carefully remove the old blade, taking caution as it may still be sharp.
  4. Position the new blade, ensuring it aligns correctly with the mechanism.
  5. Secure the new blade with the bolts, tightening them firmly but do not overtighten.
  6. After replacement, reinsert the battery, power on, and cycle the blades a few times to ensure proper function.
