1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of your Direct Store DB109 High Pressure Cast-Iron Propane Burner Head. This burner is designed as a replacement for round Bayou Classic Cooker Frames and is suitable for various DIY burner projects. It is constructed from durable cast iron, offering superior heat resistance compared to aluminum alternatives.
The package includes the cast-iron burner head, a brass fitting orifice block, an air shutter, a screw, and a spring. Please read all instructions carefully before installation and operation.
Important: This burner is designed for use with Propane Only.
2. Safety Information
Always prioritize safety when working with propane and high-pressure burners. Failure to follow these safety guidelines can result in serious injury, property damage, or death.
- For Outdoor Use Only: Never operate this burner indoors or in an enclosed area. Ensure adequate ventilation.
- Propane Only: This burner is designed exclusively for use with propane gas. Do not attempt to use it with natural gas or any other fuel.
- Leak Check: Before each use, perform a leak check on all gas connections using a soapy water solution. Bubbles indicate a leak. Do not use if a leak is detected.
- Clearance: Maintain a safe distance from combustible materials.
- Stable Surface: Ensure the cooker frame and burner are on a stable, level, non-combustible surface.
- Supervision: Never leave an operating burner unattended.
- Children and Pets: Keep children and pets away from the burner during operation and while it is cooling down.
- Hot Surfaces: The burner and surrounding areas will become extremely hot during use. Allow ample time for cooling before handling.
- Proper Regulator: Always use a high-pressure regulator appropriate for the propane tank and burner.

4. Setup and Installation
Follow these steps to assemble and install your DB109 burner head:
- Unpack Components: Carefully remove all parts from the packaging and inspect them for any damage.
- Install Orifice: Insert the brass fitting orifice block into the threaded opening at the end of the burner's neck. Tighten securely.
- Attach Air Shutter: Place the air shutter over the orifice block and secure it with the provided screw and spring. Ensure the air shutter can rotate freely for adjustment.
- Mount Burner: Position the assembled burner head within your Bayou Classic cooker frame or custom DIY setup. Ensure it is stable and properly aligned.
- Connect Propane Line: Connect your high-pressure propane regulator and hose assembly (not included) to the brass fitting orifice. Ensure all connections are tight.
- Perform Leak Check: Before lighting, apply a soapy water solution to all gas connections. If bubbles appear, tighten the connection. If bubbles persist, do not use the burner and consult a qualified technician.
5. Operating Instructions
Once the burner is properly installed and leak-checked, you can proceed with operation:
- Open Propane Valve: Slowly open the valve on your propane tank.
- Ignite Burner: Use a long-stem lighter or igniter to light the burner. Hold the flame near the burner head while slowly opening the regulator valve.
- Adjust Flame: Once lit, adjust the flame intensity using the regulator valve.
- Adjust Air Shutter: The air shutter allows you to control the air-to-fuel mixture, which affects flame quality. Rotate the air shutter to achieve a strong, blue flame. A yellow or orange flame indicates insufficient air, while a lifting or noisy flame indicates too much air.

To Shut Down: First, close the valve on the propane tank. Allow the flame to extinguish, then close the regulator valve. Disconnect the propane line only after the burner has completely cooled.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your burner:
- Cleaning: After each use, allow the burner to cool completely. Use a stiff brush to remove any food debris or carbon buildup from the burner head. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
- Orifice Inspection: Periodically check the brass orifice for any blockages. Use a small wire or needle to clear any obstructions, if necessary.
- Storage: Store the burner in a dry, protected area when not in use to prevent rust and corrosion.
- Dishwasher Safe: This product is not dishwasher safe. Clean by hand.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Burner does not light | No propane flow; clogged orifice; faulty igniter/lighter | Check propane tank valve; clear orifice; use a reliable igniter |
| Yellow/Orange flame | Insufficient air mixture | Adjust air shutter to allow more air |
| Lifting/Noisy flame | Too much air mixture | Adjust air shutter to reduce air intake |
| Gas smell | Gas leak | Immediately shut off propane. Perform leak check with soapy water. Do not operate if leak persists. |
