5. Setup
5.1 Battery Installation
The Airshi DT830L Multimeter requires one 9V (6F22) battery for operation. The battery is not included in the package.
- Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF.
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the multimeter.
- Use a screwdriver to remove the screw securing the battery cover.
- Carefully remove the cover.
- Connect a 9V battery to the battery clip, observing correct polarity (+ and -).
- Place the battery into the compartment.
- Replace the battery cover and secure it with the screw.

5.2 Connecting Test Leads
Always connect the test leads correctly for accurate and safe measurements.
- Insert the black test lead into the COM (Common) input jack.
- For most measurements (voltage, resistance, diode, transistor, and current up to 200mA), insert the red test lead into the VΩmA input jack.
- For high current measurements (up to 10A DC), insert the red test lead into the 10A input jack. Always connect the black test lead to the COM jack.

6. Operating Instructions
Before taking any measurements, ensure the multimeter is properly set up and you have read the safety information.

Figure 6.1: The Airshi DT830L Multimeter in use, demonstrating its application in electronic testing.
6.1 Measuring DC Voltage (V=)
- Connect the red test lead to the VΩmA jack and the black test lead to the COM jack.
- Set the rotary switch to the desired DC Voltage range (e.g., 20V for measuring a 12V battery). If the voltage is unknown, start with the highest range (600V) and decrease as needed.
- Connect the test probes in parallel across the component or circuit to be measured.
- Read the voltage value on the LCD display.
6.2 Measuring AC Voltage (V~)
- Connect the red test lead to the VΩmA jack and the black test lead to the COM jack.
- Set the rotary switch to the desired AC Voltage range (200V or 600V).
- Connect the test probes in parallel across the AC source or component.
- Read the voltage value on the LCD display.
6.3 Measuring DC Current (A=)
- Important: For current measurements, the multimeter must be connected in series with the circuit.
- For currents up to 200mA, connect the red test lead to the VΩmA jack. For currents up to 10A, connect the red test lead to the 10A jack. Always connect the black test lead to the COM jack.
- Set the rotary switch to the appropriate DC Current range (e.g., 200mA, 10A). Start with a higher range if the current is unknown.
- Open the circuit where you want to measure current and insert the multimeter in series.
- Read the current value on the LCD display.
6.4 Measuring Resistance (Ω)
- Ensure the circuit or component is de-energized and all capacitors are discharged.
- Connect the red test lead to the VΩmA jack and the black test lead to the COM jack.
- Set the rotary switch to the desired Resistance range (e.g., 2kΩ, 20kΩ).
- Connect the test probes across the component to be measured.
- Read the resistance value on the LCD display.
6.5 Diode Test
- Connect the red test lead to the VΩmA jack and the black test lead to the COM jack.
- Set the rotary switch to the Diode symbol (→|).
- Connect the red probe to the anode and the black probe to the cathode of the diode. A forward voltage drop (typically 0.5V to 0.8V for silicon diodes) will be displayed.
- Reverse the probes. The display should show 'OL' (Overload) for a good diode.
6.6 Transistor (hFE) Test
- Set the rotary switch to the hFE position.
- Identify if the transistor is NPN or PNP.
- Insert the transistor's emitter, base, and collector leads into the corresponding holes in the hFE socket (E, B, C).
- Read the hFE (DC current gain) value on the LCD display.
6.7 Continuity (On-Off) Test
- Ensure the circuit or component is de-energized.
- Connect the red test lead to the VΩmA jack and the black test lead to the COM jack.
- Set the rotary switch to the Continuity symbol ()))).
- Touch the test probes across the circuit or component. If there is continuity (low resistance), the multimeter will emit an audible beep. The display will show a low resistance value. If there is no continuity, the display will show 'OL'.
6.8 Data Hold Function
Press the HOLD button to freeze the current reading on the display. Press it again to release the hold and resume live readings.
6.9 Backlight Function
Press the Backlight button to turn on the blue backlight for the LCD display. This is useful in dimly lit environments. Press it again to turn off the backlight.
7. Maintenance
7.1 Cleaning
- Disconnect the test leads from the multimeter and any circuit before cleaning.
- Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents.
- Ensure the multimeter is completely dry before use.
7.2 Battery Replacement
When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the 9V battery as described in Section 5.1. Prompt battery replacement ensures measurement accuracy.
7.3 Storage
- If the multimeter is not used for an extended period, remove the battery to prevent leakage and damage.
- Store the multimeter in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
8. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No display or dim display | Dead or low battery; Incorrect battery installation | Replace battery; Check battery polarity |
| 'OL' (Overload) displayed | Measurement exceeds selected range; Open circuit (for continuity/resistance) | Select a higher range; Check circuit connections |
| Inaccurate readings | Low battery; Incorrect range selection; Poor test lead connection | Replace battery; Select appropriate range; Ensure firm connections |
| No continuity beep | Open circuit; High resistance; Multimeter not in continuity mode | Check circuit; Ensure resistance is low; Select continuity mode |
