Operating Instructions
The Smith Machine offers both guided barbell movements and a half-rack for free-weight exercises. Always warm up before exercising and cool down afterward.
Using the Smith Bar:
- Loading Weights: Carefully slide Olympic-sized weight plates onto the ends of the Smith bar. Ensure an even distribution of weight on both sides.
- Adjusting Safety Stops: Position the adjustable safety stops to prevent the bar from descending below a safe point during your exercise. This is crucial for safety, especially when lifting heavy.
- Unracking the Bar: To begin an exercise, rotate the Smith bar slightly to disengage it from the catches.
- Racking the Bar: To end an exercise, lift the bar to the desired height and rotate it backward to engage the catches securely.

Figure 6: Adjustable Safety Stop. Position these at a safe height to prevent injury during lifts.
Using the Half Rack (Free Weights):
- Positioning J-Hooks: Insert the J-hooks into the desired height on the front uprights for exercises like squats or bench presses. Ensure both J-hooks are at the same height and fully seated.
- Using Safety Spotters: For free-weight exercises, always use the adjustable safety spotters (often called safety bars or safeties) to catch the barbell if you fail a lift. Adjust them to a height just below your lowest point in the exercise.
- Loading Barbell: Load your own Olympic barbell onto the J-hooks.

Example Exercises:

- Smith Machine Bench Press: Use a weight bench inside the machine, unrack the bar, and perform bench presses.
- Smith Machine Rows: Position yourself in front of the bar, grasp it, and perform bent-over rows.
- Free Weight Squats: Using the J-hooks and safety spotters, perform squats with a free barbell.
- Free Weight Bench Press: Using a weight bench, J-hooks, and safety spotters, perform bench presses with a free barbell.
