GATTLELIC HVLP Spray Gun Kit User Manual

Model: 001

1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the GATTLELIC HVLP Spray Gun Kit. This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your new spray gun. Please read this manual thoroughly before initial use and retain it for future reference.

The GATTLELIC HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) spray gun is designed for efficient application of various coatings, including primers, clear coats, and other high-viscosity materials. Its design aims to reduce overspray and improve paint transfer efficiency, making it suitable for automotive, furniture, and general painting projects.

2. Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when operating any spray equipment. Failure to follow these safety guidelines may result in serious injury or property damage.

  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear appropriate respiratory protection (respirator mask), eye protection (safety goggles), gloves, and protective clothing to prevent exposure to paint fumes and chemicals.
  • Ensure Adequate Ventilation: Operate the spray gun in a well-ventilated area to disperse fumes and prevent the buildup of flammable vapors.
  • Flammable Materials: Do not spray near open flames, pilot lights, or any ignition sources. Paints and solvents can be highly flammable.
  • Air Compressor Safety: Ensure your air compressor is properly maintained and operated according to its manufacturer's instructions. Do not exceed the maximum recommended air pressure for the spray gun.
  • Electrical Safety: Keep electrical cords and equipment away from the spraying area to prevent accidental contact with paint or solvents.
  • Chemical Handling: Follow all manufacturer's instructions for the safe handling, storage, and disposal of paints, thinners, and cleaning solvents.
  • Keep Children and Pets Away: Do not allow children or pets near the work area during operation or cleaning.
  • Disconnect Air Supply: Always disconnect the air supply before cleaning, adjusting, or performing any maintenance on the spray gun.

4. Setup

Follow these steps to prepare your GATTLELIC HVLP Spray Gun for use:

  1. Unpack Components: Carefully remove all items from the packaging and inspect them for any damage.
  2. Select Nozzle: Choose the appropriate nozzle size for your application. The 1.4mm nozzle is suitable for clear coats, 1.7mm for primers, and 2.0mm for thicker coatings or large areas. The 1.4mm nozzle is pre-installed.
  3. Install Nozzle and Air Cap: If changing nozzles, ensure the spray gun is clean and the air supply is disconnected. Carefully remove the existing air cap and nozzle. Install the desired nozzle and then securely attach the air cap. The brass air cap features 15 precision-machined holes for high atomization.
  4. Attach Mixing Cup: Securely screw the 600cc mixing cup onto the top of the spray gun. Ensure a tight seal to prevent leaks.
  5. Connect Air Supply: Attach your air compressor hose to the NPT 1/4 inch air inlet on the spray gun. Use the provided quick adapter if necessary. Ensure the connection is secure and leak-free.

5. Operating Instructions

Proper operation ensures optimal results and extends the life of your spray gun.

5.1 Paint Preparation

  • Mix Paint: Thoroughly mix your paint according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Strain Paint: Always strain the paint through a fine mesh filter to remove any impurities that could clog the nozzle.
  • Fill Cup: Pour the prepared paint into one of the 600cc disposable mixing cups. The disposable cup system reduces material waste and cleaning effort.

5.2 Adjustments

The GATTLELIC HVLP spray gun features three main adjustment controls:

Figure 5.1: Illustration of the spray gun's adjustment points: Flow Control Valve, Air Control Valve, and Spray Width Adjustment.

  • Flow Control Valve: Rotate this knob to adjust the paint flow rate. Turn clockwise for less paint, counter-clockwise for more.
  • Air Control Valve: This valve regulates the air pressure, allowing for fine-tuning of atomization and paint saving. Adjust for optimal spray quality.
  • Spray Width Adjustment: Rotate the knob at the end of the gun to change the spray pattern from a round shape to a wider, oval shape. Adjust gradually to achieve the desired coverage.

5.3 Spraying Technique

  • Test Spray: Always perform a test spray on a scrap piece of material to verify your settings and technique before applying to your actual workpiece.
  • Maintain Distance: Hold the spray gun perpendicular to the surface, maintaining a consistent distance of approximately 170-240mm (6.7-9.4 inches).
  • Consistent Speed: Move the spray gun at a steady, even speed across the surface. Overlapping each pass by about 50% ensures uniform coverage.
  • Trigger Control: Fully depress the trigger at the beginning of each pass and release it at the end. Avoid feathering the trigger.
  • High Paint Utilization: The HVLP design provides a high transfer efficiency (up to 65%), resulting in less paint waste and smoother finishes compared to conventional spray guns.

6. Maintenance and Cleaning

Thorough cleaning after each use is crucial for maintaining the performance and longevity of your spray gun.

  1. Disconnect Air: Always disconnect the air supply before cleaning.
  2. Empty Paint: Empty any remaining paint from the mixing cup. Dispose of paint and cleaning solvents according to local regulations.
  3. Flush with Solvent: Pour a small amount of appropriate cleaning solvent (e.g., paint thinner, lacquer thinner, water for water-based paints) into the cup. Reattach the cup and spray the solvent through the gun into a waste container until it runs clear.
  4. Disassemble: Remove the air cap, nozzle, and fluid needle.
  5. Clean Components: Use the provided cleaning brush and solvent to thoroughly clean the air cap, nozzle, and fluid needle. Pay close attention to the small holes in the air cap to ensure they are free of paint residue.
  6. Clean Gun Body: Wipe down the exterior of the gun body with a solvent-dampened cloth. Do not immerse the entire gun in solvent.
  7. Reassemble: Once all components are clean and dry, reassemble the spray gun. Lubricate the fluid needle packing with a small amount of spray gun lubricant if necessary.
  8. Storage: Store the clean and dry spray gun in a safe, dry place.

7. Troubleshooting

Refer to the table below for common issues and their potential solutions.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Poor atomization / Uneven sprayIncorrect air pressure; paint too thick; clogged nozzle/air cap; worn nozzle/needle.Adjust air pressure; thin paint as per manufacturer; clean nozzle/air cap; replace worn parts.
Paint spitting or pulsingLoose fluid nozzle; insufficient paint in cup; air leak; clogged air vent in cup lid.Tighten fluid nozzle; refill paint cup; check for air leaks; clear air vent.
Excessive oversprayToo much air pressure; gun too far from surface; incorrect spray pattern.Reduce air pressure; move gun closer to surface; adjust spray width.
Paint leaks from nozzleDamaged fluid needle or nozzle; loose fluid packing nut.Replace damaged parts; tighten fluid packing nut.
No paint flowClogged nozzle; fluid needle stuck; paint too thick; air cap blocked.Clean nozzle/air cap; check fluid needle movement; thin paint.
