4. Product Overview and Controls
The Bolanle J22 features a robust metal housing and intuitive controls for signal management.

Figure 1: Front and Rear Panel Layout
Front Panel Controls:
- INPUT (Left/Right): Dual unbalanced 1/4" TRS inputs for connecting instruments.
- THRU (Left/Right): Dual 1/4" outputs for sending the input signal directly to an amplifier or other stage equipment.
- PAD (-15dB): Attenuates the input signal by 15dB to prevent clipping from high-output instruments.
- HPF (80Hz): Activates an 80Hz high-pass filter to remove unwanted low-frequency rumble.
- POWER: LED indicator for power status.
Rear Panel Controls:
- BALANCED OUTPUT (Left/Right): Dual balanced XLR outputs for connecting to a mixer or audio interface.
- 180° Polarity Reversal: Inverts the phase of the output signal. Useful for correcting phase issues between multiple microphones or direct signals.
- GROUND LIFT: Disconnects the ground connection between the input and output to eliminate hum and buzz caused by ground loops.
- Power Input (USB-C): For 5V USB power supply.
Power Options:

Figure 2: Multiple Power Supply Options
- 48V Phantom Power: The unit can be powered directly from a mixer or audio interface providing 48V phantom power via the XLR outputs.
- 9V Battery: Insert a standard 9V battery into the compartment. This allows for standalone operation without external power.
- 5V USB Power: Connect the included USB cable to the USB-C port and a 5V USB power source (e.g., power bank, USB adapter).

5. Setup
Connecting Instruments:
- Connect your instrument (guitar, bass, keyboard, etc.) to the INPUT (Left/Right) 1/4" jacks on the front panel using standard instrument cables.
- If you need to send the signal to an amplifier or other stage equipment simultaneously, connect from the THRU (Left/Right) 1/4" jacks to your desired destination.
Connecting to a Mixer or Audio Interface:
- Connect the BALANCED OUTPUT (Left/Right) XLR jacks on the rear panel to the XLR inputs of your mixer or audio interface using balanced XLR cables.
Powering the Unit:
Choose one of the following power methods:
- Phantom Power: If your mixer or audio interface provides 48V phantom power, activate it. The J22 will automatically draw power through the XLR cables.
- 9V Battery: Open the battery compartment and insert a fresh 9V battery.
- USB Power: Connect the USB-C cable to the unit and a 5V USB power source.

6. Operating Instructions
Using the PAD Switch:
If your instrument has a very high output level, the signal may clip or distort at the input of the DI box or the connected mixer. Engage the PAD (-15dB) switch to reduce the input signal by 15dB, preventing overload and ensuring a clean signal.
Using the HPF Switch:
The HPF (80Hz) switch activates a high-pass filter at 80Hz. This is useful for removing unwanted low-frequency noise, such as stage rumble, handling noise, or excessive bass from certain instruments, which can muddy the mix.
Using the GROUND LIFT Switch:
If you experience hum or buzz in your audio signal, it may be caused by a ground loop. Engage the GROUND LIFT switch to disconnect the ground path between the input and output. This often resolves ground loop issues without affecting the audio signal quality.
Using the 180° Polarity Reversal Switch:
The 180° Polarity Reversal switch inverts the phase of the output signal. This is primarily used to correct phase cancellations that can occur when combining signals from multiple sources (e.g., a direct signal from the DI box and a microphone on an amplifier). Listen to the combined sound and switch the polarity to find the most coherent and full sound.
Stereo vs. Dual Mono Operation:
The J22 is a stereo DI box, meaning it can process two independent channels (Left and Right). You can use it for:
- Stereo Instruments: Connect the stereo outputs of a keyboard or synth to the Left and Right inputs of the J22 to maintain full stereo separation.
- Two Separate Mono Instruments: Connect two different mono instruments (e.g., a guitar and a bass) to the Left and Right inputs, treating the J22 as two independent mono DI boxes.

7. Applications
The Bolanle J22 is suitable for a wide range of audio applications:
- Live Stages: Connect instruments directly to the PA system.
- Recording Studios: Achieve clean, balanced signals for recording.
- Rehearsal Rooms: Integrate instruments into a practice setup.
- Church PA Systems: Ensure clear instrument sound for worship services.
- DJ Booths: Connect DJ equipment to house sound systems.

9. Troubleshooting
No Sound:
- Ensure the DI box is properly powered (48V phantom, 9V battery, or USB). Check the POWER LED.
- Verify all cables are securely connected to the correct inputs and outputs.
- Check the volume levels on your instrument, mixer, and amplifier.
- Ensure the PAD switch is not engaged if your instrument has a low output.
Hum or Buzz:
- Engage the GROUND LIFT switch on the rear panel.
- Try different power outlets or power sources for your equipment.
- Ensure all cables are in good condition and properly shielded.
Distorted Sound:
- Engage the PAD (-15dB) switch if your instrument has a high output level.
- Reduce the output level of your instrument.
- Check the input gain settings on your mixer or audio interface.
Thin or Phased Sound:
- If combining signals from multiple sources, try engaging or disengaging the 180° Polarity Reversal switch to correct phase issues.
10. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the unit. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the unit in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Battery Replacement: If using battery power, replace the 9V battery when the POWER LED dims or the unit stops functioning. Remove the battery if the unit will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
