BST BSSP Front Upper Control Arms Installation and User Manual

For 2004-2022 Ford F-150 (Excludes Raptor Models) with 2"-4" Lift Kits

1. Product Overview

This manual provides instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your BST BSSP Front Upper Control Arms. These control arms are designed to enhance the suspension performance of 2004-2022 Ford F-150 models (excluding Raptor models) equipped with 2-4 inch lift kits.

The control arms are constructed from forged billet aluminum with an anodized coating, featuring CNC machined dust caps and stainless-steel hardware for corrosion resistance and durability. They are engineered to increase wheel travel, correct suspension geometry, and accommodate larger coil-overs, minimizing binding and camber changes throughout suspension travel. The design incorporates uniballs and rod ends to reduce maintenance requirements.

2. Installation Instructions

Important Safety Information:

  • Professional installation is recommended.
  • Ensure the vehicle is securely supported on a lift or jack stands before beginning work.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and gloves.
  • Refer to your vehicle's service manual for specific torque specifications and additional safety procedures.

Components Included:

  • 2 x Front Upper Control Arms (Left and Right)
  • Pre-pressed Ball Joints
  • Rod End Bearing Bushings
  • Mounting Hardware

Installation Steps:

  1. Prepare the Vehicle: Park the vehicle on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and block the rear wheels. Loosen the front wheel lug nuts.
  2. Lift the Vehicle: Safely lift the front of the vehicle and support it with jack stands under the frame. Remove the front wheels.
  3. Remove OEM Control Arms:
    • Carefully disconnect the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle.
    • Remove the bolts securing the OEM upper control arm to the frame.
    • Remove the OEM upper control arm.
  4. Install BST BSSP Control Arms:
    • Position the new BST BSSP upper control arm in the vehicle's frame mounts.
    • Secure the control arm to the frame using the provided hardware. Do not fully tighten at this stage.
    • Connect the new ball joint to the steering knuckle.
  5. Adjust Control Arms (if necessary): The control arms feature adjustable bushings for camber and caster correction. Adjustments should be made before final tightening and may require specialized tools. Initial adjustment can be set to approximately 0.5" to 1" of extension, but final precise adjustment will be done during alignment.

Note: Some users have reported difficulty adjusting the arms while installed. It may be necessary to remove the arms for significant adjustments. Ensure the adjustable end links are not extended excessively, as this may compromise safety.

  6. Final Tightening: Once the control arms are in place and initial adjustments are made, tighten all mounting hardware to the vehicle manufacturer's specified torque values.
  7. Reinstall Wheels: Reinstall the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  8. Professional Alignment: Alignment is required immediately after installation. This is crucial for proper vehicle handling, tire wear, and safety. Inform the alignment technician about the adjustable control arms.

3. Product Functionality

The BST BSSP Front Upper Control Arms are designed to optimize your vehicle's suspension geometry, especially after a 2-4 inch lift. Key functionalities include:

  • Increased Wheel Travel: Allows for greater suspension articulation, improving off-road performance and ride quality.
  • Corrected Suspension Geometry: Maintains proper alignment angles (camber and caster) throughout the suspension's range of motion, which is critical for handling and tire longevity on lifted vehicles.
  • Enhanced Durability: Forged billet aluminum construction and robust ball joints provide superior strength compared to OEM components.
  • Reduced Maintenance: The uniball and rod end design minimizes the need for regular greasing.

4. Maintenance

These control arms are designed for low maintenance. The use of uniballs and rod ends minimizes the need for traditional greasing. Periodically inspect the following components:

  • Ball Joints: Check for any signs of wear, looseness, or damage.
  • Bushings: Inspect the rod end bearing bushings for wear or cracking.
  • Hardware: Ensure all bolts and nuts remain tight. Re-torque if necessary, especially after initial use.
  • Protective Covers: Verify that the CNC machined aluminum dust caps are securely in place to protect the ball joints from contaminants.

The arms are fully rebuildable, allowing for replacement of individual components if wear occurs over time.

5. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues that may arise during or after the installation of your BST BSSP Front Upper Control Arms.

  • Difficulty with Alignment: If the vehicle cannot be aligned to factory specifications after installation, ensure the adjustable end links on the control arms are correctly set. Significant adjustments may require removing the arms from the vehicle for easier manipulation. Professional alignment is mandatory.
  • Limited Ball Joint Articulation: If the ball joints appear to have insufficient articulation, particularly with certain lift heights, verify that the control arms are compatible with your specific lift kit and vehicle model. Excessive extension of adjustable end links to compensate for articulation issues is not recommended and may compromise safety.
  • Premature Ball Joint Wear: While designed for durability, aggressive off-road use or improper installation can accelerate wear. Regular inspection is crucial. Replacement ball joints may be required over time.
  • Noise from Suspension: Check all mounting points for proper torque. Inspect ball joints and bushings for wear or damage that could cause rattling or squeaking.
  • Missing Parts: If any components are missing from the package, contact BST BSSP customer support immediately.
