4. Setup and Installation
Follow these steps to safely replace the heat plates in your grill:
- Ensure Grill is Off and Cool: Before beginning, make sure your grill is completely turned off, disconnected from its fuel source (propane tank), and has cooled down to a safe temperature.
- Open Grill Lid: Lift the grill lid to access the cooking grates and internal components.
- Remove Cooking Grates: Carefully lift and remove the cooking grates from the grill. Set them aside on a clean, stable surface.
- Remove Old Heat Plates: Locate the existing heat plates (also known as flame tamers or heat tents). These are typically positioned above the burners. Carefully lift out the old, worn-out heat plates. Dispose of them properly.
- Clean Grill Interior (Optional but Recommended): This is a good opportunity to clean any accumulated grease or debris from the grill's firebox and burner area. Use a grill brush or scraper as needed.
- Install New Heat Plates: Place the new BBQration Porcelain Steel Heat Plates directly over the burners. Ensure they are seated correctly and cover the burners evenly. The pointed ends typically face upwards, creating a tent-like structure.

- Replace Cooking Grates: Carefully place the cooking grates back into their original position on top of the newly installed heat plates.
- Close Lid and Reconnect Fuel: Close the grill lid and reconnect the propane tank. Your grill is now ready for use.
5. Function and Usage
The heat plates serve several critical functions in your gas grill:
- Even Heat Distribution: They help to distribute heat evenly across the cooking surface, preventing hot spots and ensuring consistent cooking results.
- Burner Protection: They shield the burners from direct exposure to grease drippings and food particles, which can cause flare-ups and clog burner ports.
- Vaporization of Drippings: When grease and food juices fall onto the hot heat plates, they vaporize, creating smoke that infuses your food with a distinct grilled flavor.

6. Maintenance
Regular cleaning and maintenance will prolong the life of your heat plates and ensure optimal grill performance:
- After Each Use: After the grill has cooled, use a grill brush or scraper to remove any large food particles or charred residue from the heat plates.
- Deep Cleaning (Periodically): For a more thorough cleaning, remove the heat plates from the grill. You can wash them with warm, soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge or brush. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before placing them back in the grill.
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Do not use harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive pads, as these can damage the porcelain enamel coating.
- Inspect Regularly: Periodically inspect the heat plates for signs of excessive wear, rust, or damage. Replace them if they are severely corroded or warped, as this can affect grill performance and safety.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues related to your heat plates, consider the following:
- Uneven Heat: Ensure heat plates are correctly positioned over the burners and are not warped or damaged. Clean any blockages on the heat plates or burners.
- Excessive Flare-ups: This often indicates a buildup of grease on the heat plates or inside the grill. Perform a thorough cleaning as described in the Maintenance section.
- Rust Formation: While porcelain steel is resistant, prolonged exposure to moisture and food acids can lead to rust. Ensure plates are dry after cleaning and stored in a dry environment if removed from the grill for extended periods. Regular cleaning helps prevent rust.
