Setup Guide

Before playing your Fesley violin, some initial setup is required. Follow these steps carefully.

1. Installing the Bridge

The bridge is a small, unglued piece of wood. It is crucial for sound production and must be installed correctly.

1. Identify the E-string and G-string side: The bottom of the bridge is usually a straight line. The side with the higher arch is for the E-string (thinnest string), and the lower arch is for the G-string (thickest string).
2. Loosen the strings slightly: To avoid snapping a string while placing the bridge, loosen the tuning pegs slightly. The strings should be loose enough that you can easily pull them up and down, allowing them to be lifted up enough to slip the bridge under the strings.
3. Place the bridge between the F-holes: The F-holes are two 'f'-shaped holes found near the end of the violin's body. Position the bridge so its feet are roughly in the middle of the F-holes.
4. Tighten the strings: Gradually tighten each string in the sequence of G-D-A-E. The reason for starting from the G string is to prevent damaging the thinner E and A strings. Tighten one string at a time, then tighten the next. Do not tighten one string all the way to the desired pitch while leaving the other strings very loose. This will create unequal pressure on the bridge, causing it to fall.
5. Ensure 90-degree angle: Once you've placed your bridge, check to make sure its placement is correct. The side of the bridge facing the violin's tailpiece should stand at roughly 90 degrees. If the bridge is leaning forward or backward, gently push it into the correct vertical position.

2. Rosining the Bow

The bow hair needs rosin to create friction with the strings. Rub the rosin back and forth along the bow hair for at least 5-10 minutes until you see white powder coming out from the horse's hair. This will allow the bow to make a sound.

3. Attaching the Shoulder Rest

The shoulder rest attaches to the back of the violin, providing comfort and stability while playing. Adjust the feet of the shoulder rest to securely grip the violin's lower bouts without excessive pressure.

4. Tuning the Violin

Use the included digital tuner to fine-tune each string. The pegs make larger adjustments, while the fine tuners on the tailpiece allow for small, precise adjustments. Pluck a note and adjust until the tuner indicates it is in tune.

Operating Your Violin

Once your violin is set up and tuned, you are ready to begin playing. Hold the violin securely with the shoulder rest, ensuring a comfortable posture. Use the bow to draw across the strings, applying appropriate pressure and speed to produce clear tones.

Playing Techniques:

• Bow Hold: Hold the bow lightly but firmly, with a relaxed grip.
• Bow Stroke: Draw the bow smoothly across the strings, parallel to the bridge, to produce a consistent sound.
• Finger Placement: Use the included fretboard stickers as a guide for accurate finger placement to produce different notes.
