1. Introduction

The Airthings Corentium Home Digital Radon Detector is a battery-operated device designed for continuous and long-term monitoring of radon gas levels in your home. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can accumulate indoors and is a leading cause of lung cancer. This detector provides accurate, real-time readings without the need for lab fees or external analysis, offering peace of mind regarding your indoor air quality.

Unlike charcoal tests, this digital detector is less affected by electromagnetic interference and dust, and performs optimally in humidity below 85%. It can be reset and reused indefinitely, making it a cost-effective solution for ongoing radon surveillance.

4. Setup

1. Battery Installation:
   Open the battery compartment on the back of the device. Insert three AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity. Close the compartment securely. The device will power on automatically.
2. Initial Placement:
   Place the detector on the lowest livable floor of your home, as radon typically accumulates in lower areas. Ensure it is placed at least 20 inches (50 cm) from the floor, walls, and any heat sources or vents. Avoid placing it in direct drafts or areas with high humidity.
3. First Measurement:
   The device will begin monitoring immediately. You will receive your first radon measurement within 24 hours. For the most accurate long-term average, allow the device to operate for at least 7 days.

5. Operating the Device

5.1 Understanding the Display

The LCD screen displays two primary readings:

• Long Term Average: This is the average radon level over the entire measurement period since the last reset, or for the last year if the device has been running longer. This reading is crucial for assessing your overall radon exposure risk.
• Short Term Average: This displays the average radon level over the last 1 day or 7 days, depending on the mode. This provides insight into recent fluctuations in radon levels.

Radon levels are typically measured in pCi/L (picocuries per liter) in the United States.

5.2 Interpreting Radon Levels

The device's display includes a visual guide to help interpret your long-term average radon levels:

• 0-2 pCi/L: Keep monitoring. Levels are considered low.
• 2-4 pCi/L: Ventilate and monitor. Consider increasing ventilation and continue monitoring closely.
• 4+ pCi/L: Contact a professional and keep monitoring. Levels are elevated and professional mitigation is recommended.

Radon levels can fluctuate daily due to environmental factors such as weather, ventilation, and ground conditions. Long-term monitoring provides the most reliable assessment of your home's average radon concentration.

5.3 Resetting the Device

To reset the device and clear all previous measurements, locate the 'Reset' button on the back of the unit (refer to Figure 1). Press and hold the 'Reset' button for approximately 5 seconds until the display clears or indicates a reset. This action starts a new measurement period.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Battery Replacement

The Airthings Corentium Home operates on three AAA batteries, providing approximately 2 years of continuous operation. When the battery indicator on the display shows low power, replace all three batteries with new AAA batteries. Ensure the device is powered off or in a safe state before replacing batteries.

6.2 Cleaning

Clean the exterior of the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or spray directly onto the device. Ensure no moisture enters the device openings.

7. Troubleshooting

• No Display: Check if the batteries are correctly installed and have sufficient charge. Replace batteries if necessary.
• Inaccurate Readings: Ensure the device is placed according to the guidelines in Section 4.2. Avoid placing it near drafts, heat sources, or in areas with high humidity. Allow sufficient time (at least 7 days) for the device to establish an accurate long-term average.
• Device Not Responding: Try removing and reinserting the batteries. If the issue persists, perform a factory reset by holding the 'Reset' button.
