Setup and Installation
This universal steering column is designed for custom applications. It is not a direct OEM replacement and may require additional components and fabrication for proper installation in your specific vehicle. Examples of potentially required additional components include dash mounts, steering linkage, floor mounts, and transmission linkage.
1. Pre-Installation Checks
- Review Vehicle Requirements: Before starting, understand the specific mounting and linkage requirements of your vehicle.
- Gather Tools: Ensure you have all necessary tools, including wrenches, sockets, wire strippers, crimpers, and a multimeter.
- Inspect Components: Carefully inspect the steering column and all included parts for any shipping damage.
2. Mounting the Steering Column
- Remove Old Column: Disconnect the battery, remove the steering wheel, and carefully detach the existing steering column from the dash and steering linkage.
- Position New Column: Temporarily position the new BST BSSP steering column in the desired location. This column is 32 inches long (excluding the 9-hole adapter).
- Fabricate Mounts (if necessary): If your vehicle requires custom dash or floor mounts, fabricate and install them to securely hold the column. Ensure the column is properly aligned with the steering shaft and driver's position.
- Secure Column: Fasten the steering column securely using appropriate hardware.

3. Steering Linkage Connection
- Connect Output Shaft: Connect the 1-inch DD lower output shaft of the steering column to your vehicle's steering linkage. This may require a universal joint or custom shaft.
- Ensure Clearance: Verify that there is adequate clearance for the steering linkage throughout its full range of motion.
4. Wiring
The steering column includes wiring for turn signals, hazard lights, and horn. A neutral safety switch is not included. Refer to your vehicle's specific wiring diagram for proper connections. Below is a general guide for common wire functions:

| Wire Color (Typical) | Function |
| Green | Right Turn Signal |
| Yellow | Left Turn Signal |
| Brown | Hazard Flasher Input |
| Purple | Brake Light Switch Input |
| Black | Ground |
| Orange | Constant Power (for hazards) |
| Light Blue | Horn |
Important: Always verify wire functions with a multimeter before making final connections, as color codes can vary. Ensure all connections are secure and properly insulated.
5. Installing Steering Wheel and Adapter
- Install 9-Hole Adapter: Slide the included 9-hole steering wheel adapter onto the top shaft of the column. This adapter adds 2.25 inches to the column height.
- Mount Steering Wheel: Attach your 9-hole steering wheel to the adapter using appropriate hardware. Ensure it is centered and securely tightened.

6. Installing Levers and Indicators
- Turn Signal Lever: Insert the turn signal lever into its designated slot on the column head.
- Tilt Lever: Thread the tilt lever into its receptacle. Ensure it engages properly.
- Hazard Switch: Install the hazard switch button.
- Shift Indicator: Install the gear indicator housing and select the appropriate 3-speed or 4-speed lens for your transmission.

Operating Instructions
Tilt Function
To adjust the steering column angle, pull the tilt lever towards you. While holding the lever, move the steering wheel up or down to your desired position. Release the lever to lock the column in place.
Turn Signals
Push the turn signal lever up for a right turn and down for a left turn. The lever should automatically return to the neutral position after completing the turn. If it does not, manually return it.
Hazard Lights
Press the hazard switch button to activate the hazard warning lights. Press it again to turn them off.
Gear Shift Indicator
The gear indicator displays the current transmission gear (e.g., P, R, N, D, 2, 1). Ensure the indicator aligns correctly with the transmission's actual gear selection. Adjust the linkage if necessary to ensure accurate indication.

Maintenance
- Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect the steering column for any signs of wear, looseness, or damage. Check all mounting points and connections.
- Lubrication: Moving parts within the column, such as the tilt mechanism, may benefit from occasional lubrication with a suitable automotive grease or spray lubricant.
- Electrical Connections: Ensure all electrical connections remain clean, tight, and free from corrosion.
- Cleaning: Clean the exterior of the column with a soft cloth and mild automotive cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals that could damage the finish.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
| Turn signal does not self-cancel. | Faulty turn signal cancelling cam or improper installation. | Inspect the turn signal cancelling cam for damage or misalignment. Ensure the steering wheel is properly installed and engaging the cam. Replacement of the cam may be necessary. |
| Tilt lever does not engage or is loose. | Improperly threaded lever or internal tilt mechanism issue. | Ensure the tilt lever is fully and correctly threaded into its receptacle. If the lever itself is defective (e.g., no threads), contact BST BSSP support for a replacement. If the internal mechanism is faulty, professional repair may be required. |
| Upper section of the column feels loose or wobbles. | Loose mounting bolts or internal tilt mechanism components. | Check all column mounting bolts (dash and floor) for tightness. If the looseness is within the tilt mechanism, it may indicate an internal component issue requiring professional inspection. |
| Shifter does not shift correctly or gear indicator is inaccurate. | Improperly adjusted transmission linkage or faulty shift indicator. | Verify that the transmission linkage is correctly connected and adjusted to the steering column's shift mechanism. Ensure the shift indicator lens matches your transmission. Adjust the indicator cable if necessary. |
| No electrical function (turn signals, hazards, horn). | Incorrect wiring, blown fuse, or faulty switch. | Review the wiring connections against your vehicle's diagram and the general guide provided. Check for continuity with a multimeter. Inspect fuses in your vehicle's fuse box. Test the individual switches for proper operation. |
