1. Introduction

This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the HP Deskjet 2820 WiFi Colour Printer. This all-in-one device is designed for home use, offering print, scan, and copy functionalities with convenient wireless connectivity.

3. Setup

Follow these steps to set up your HP Deskjet 2820 printer for the first time.

3.1 Unpacking and Power Connection

  1. Remove all packaging materials, tapes, and protective films from the printer.
  2. Connect the power cord to the printer and then to a wall outlet.
  3. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

3.2 Installing Ink Cartridges

  1. Open the ink cartridge access door.
  2. Wait for the carriage to move to the center.
  3. Insert the Black ink cartridge into the right slot and the Tri-Colour ink cartridge into the left slot. Ensure they click into place.

Note: Only setup ink cartridges are supplied with the box. Use HP 805 Black Original Ink Cartridge and HP 805 Tri-Colour Original Ink Cartridge for replacements.

3.3 Loading Paper

  1. Raise the input tray.
  2. Slide the paper width guide to its outermost position.
  3. Load a stack of plain white paper into the input tray, print side down.
  4. Slide the paper width guide inward until it rests against the edge of the paper.
  5. Lower the output tray extender.

3.4 Connecting to a Computer or Mobile Device

The HP Deskjet 2820 supports both USB and Wi-Fi connectivity.

3.4.1 Wi-Fi Setup (Recommended)

For wireless printing, scanning, and copying, use the HP Smart app.

  1. Download the HP Smart app from your device's app store (hp.com/go/hpsmart).
  2. Open the app and follow the on-screen instructions to connect your printer to your Wi-Fi network.
  3. The printer's Wi-Fi feature automatically reconnects if the connection is lost.

3.4.2 USB Setup

4.2 Scanning

To scan documents or photos:

  1. Place the original document face-down on the scanner glass.
  2. From the HP Smart app: Select "Scan," choose your scan settings (e.g., color, resolution, file type), and initiate the scan.
  3. From a Computer: Use the HP Scan software (if installed) or your operating system's scanning utility.

The scanner is a flatbed type.

4.3 Copying

To make copies:

  1. Place the original document face-down on the scanner glass.

5.1 Replacing Ink Cartridges

When ink levels are low, the printer will indicate this. Replace cartridges as follows:

  4. Press down on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it out.
  5. Remove the new HP 805 Black or Tri-Colour ink cartridge from its packaging.
  6. Insert the new cartridge into the correct slot (Black on the right, Tri-Colour on the left) until it clicks into place.
  7. Close the ink cartridge access door.

5.2 Cleaning the Printer

Periodically clean the exterior of the printer with a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or spray liquids directly onto the printer.

5.3 Paper Handling

Always use recommended paper types and sizes. The input tray has a capacity of 60 sheets, and the output tray can hold 25 sheets. Supported page sizes include A4, B5, A6, and DL envelope.

If you encounter issues with your printer, try the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • Printer Not Responding:
    • Check power connections.
    • Ensure the printer is turned on.
    • Verify USB cable connection or Wi-Fi status.
    • Restart the printer and your computer/mobile device.
  • Print Quality Issues:
    • Check ink levels and replace cartridges if necessary.
    • Perform a print head cleaning or alignment from the HP Smart app or printer software.
    • Ensure you are using appropriate paper for your print job.
  • Connectivity Problems:
    • For Wi-Fi, ensure your printer is within range of your router.
    • Restart your router.
    • Re-run the wireless setup from the HP Smart app.
  • Paper Jams:
    • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
    • Carefully remove any jammed paper from the input tray, output tray, or inside the printer.
    • Ensure paper is loaded correctly and not overfilled.
