6. Setup Instructions
- Unpack and Inspect: Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Inspect for any damage.
- Prepare Filter Media:
- Rinse all filter media (especially mechanical media like sponges and ceramic rings) thoroughly under tap water to remove any dust or debris.
- Arrange the media in the baskets. Typically, mechanical filtration (coarse sponges) goes in the bottom basket, followed by biological media (ceramic rings, bio-balls), and then finer mechanical filtration (fine sponges, filter floss) in the top baskets. Activated carbon or other chemical media can be placed in a middle basket if desired.
- Ensure the UV lamp is securely installed in its designated compartment within the filter head or top basket, if applicable.
- Assemble Canister: Stack the filled filter baskets into the canister body. Ensure the rubber gasket on the filter head is clean and properly seated. Securely attach the filter head to the canister body using the locking clips.
- Connect Hoses:
- Attach the inlet and outlet hose adapters to the filter head.
- Connect the provided tubing to the adapters.
- Install the inlet strainer and outlet spray bar/nozzle assembly inside the aquarium using the suction cups and clips. Ensure the inlet strainer is positioned near the bottom of the tank and the outlet is near the surface for good water circulation.
- Route the hoses neatly, avoiding kinks. Ensure the filter is placed below the aquarium water level.
- Fill and Prime the Filter:
- Open the inlet and outlet valves on the filter head.
- Use the priming button/lever on the filter head to manually pump water into the filter until it is completely filled and water flows freely through the outlet hose. Alternatively, you can pour water directly into the inlet hose from the aquarium until the filter is full.
- Ensure all air is expelled from the filter and hoses.

Figure 4: Illustrates the process of manually priming the filter by pouring water into the inlet hose, ensuring the filter is filled before starting operation.
- Power On: Once the filter is fully primed and water is flowing, plug the power cord into a grounded electrical outlet. The pump will start, and water will begin circulating.
- Check for Leaks: Carefully inspect all connections for any leaks. Tighten connections if necessary.
7. Operating Instructions
- Initial Operation: After setup, the filter will begin circulating and filtering water. It may take a few hours for the water to clear completely, especially in a new setup.
- Flow Adjustment: The filter features an adjustable flow control. Rotate the lever on the inlet/outlet valve assembly to increase or decrease the water flow rate as needed for your aquarium.
- UV Lamp Operation: The XWA-1000U-5 model includes a 9W UV lamp. This lamp operates continuously when the filter is powered on. The UV light helps control free-floating algae and harmful bacteria.
- Monitoring: Regularly check the water flow rate. A decrease in flow often indicates that the filter media needs cleaning.
8. Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal filter performance and water quality.
8.1 Routine Cleaning (Every 2-4 Weeks, or as needed)
- Disconnect Power: Always unplug the filter from the power outlet before any maintenance.
- Close Valves: Close the inlet and outlet valves on the filter head to prevent water backflow.
- Disconnect Hoses: Use the quick-release mechanism to detach the hose assembly from the filter head.
- Transport Filter: Carefully move the filter to a suitable cleaning area (e.g., a sink or bucket).
- Open Canister: Release the locking clips and remove the filter head.
- Clean Media:
- Remove filter media baskets.
- Rinse mechanical media (sponges, floss) thoroughly in old aquarium water (from a water change) to preserve beneficial bacteria. Avoid using tap water directly on biological media unless absolutely necessary, as chlorine can kill beneficial bacteria.
- Clean the inside of the canister body and filter head.
- Reassemble: Reassemble the filter in reverse order, ensuring all seals are clean and properly seated. Prime the filter as described in the setup section before reconnecting power.
8.2 UV Lamp Replacement (Every 6-12 Months)
The effectiveness of the UV lamp diminishes over time. Replace it annually or bi-annually for optimal performance.
- Disconnect Power: Unplug the filter.
- Access UV Compartment: Follow instructions for opening the filter head to access the UV lamp.
- Replace Lamp: Carefully remove the old UV lamp and insert a new, compatible 9W UV lamp. Avoid touching the glass of the new lamp with bare hands.
- Reassemble: Securely reassemble the filter head and canister.
8.3 Impeller Cleaning
If the filter runs noisily or with reduced flow, the impeller may be obstructed. Disconnect power, remove the filter head, and carefully remove the impeller cover to clean the impeller and its shaft.
