1. Introduction
The KH Alert KH106 is a versatile 3-in-1 Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector designed to monitor CO concentration, ambient temperature, and humidity. This device provides continuous monitoring and alerts users to potentially dangerous CO levels through audible and visual alarms. Its plug-in design ensures ease of installation and portability, making it suitable for various indoor environments.
2. Safety Information
Please read and understand all safety instructions before operating this device. Failure to follow these instructions may result in product malfunction, property damage, or serious injury.
- This device is designed for indoor use only.
- Do not block the air inlet or outlet vents.
- Do not paint the device. Paint can clog the vents and interfere with sensor operation.
- Do not expose the device to direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, or high humidity.
- Regularly test the detector as instructed in the 'Maintenance' section.
- In case of an alarm, immediately move to fresh air and call emergency services.
- This device is not a substitute for proper maintenance of fuel-burning appliances.
3. Product Overview

- Temperature Display: Shows ambient temperature in Fahrenheit.
- CO Concentration Display: Shows Carbon Monoxide levels in Parts Per Million (PPM).
- Humidity Display: Shows relative humidity in percentage (RH%).
- Power Light (Green): Indicates the device is powered on and functioning normally.
- Fault Light (Yellow): Indicates a device malfunction or sensor error.
- Alarm Light (Red): Flashes during a CO alarm event.
- SELF-TEST Button: Used to manually test the alarm function.
- Voice Alarm: Emits an audible warning during a CO alarm.
- Plug: For connecting the device to a standard AC outlet.
- Air Inlet: Allows ambient air to reach the internal sensors.
- Temperature and Humidity Sensor: Detects ambient temperature and humidity.
4. Setup
4.1 Initial Setup
The KH Alert KH106 detector is designed for simple plug-and-play operation.
- Remove Protective Film: Before use, carefully peel off the protective film from the LCD screen. This ensures clear visibility of the display and prevents scratches from affecting the mirror effect.

Figure 4.1: Removing the protective film from the LCD screen before first use.
- Plug In: Insert the detector into a standard AC 110-220V wall outlet. Ensure it is securely plugged in.
- Power On: Upon plugging in, the device will initiate a self-check. The power light will illuminate green, and the display will show initial readings. A voice prompt will confirm activation.
4.2 Optimal Placement
Proper placement is crucial for effective CO detection. Carbon Monoxide is slightly lighter than air and mixes readily with it. For optimal detection, place the unit:
- In areas where fuel-burning appliances are located (e.g., kitchen, utility room).
- Near sleeping areas to ensure alarms are heard.
- At least 5 feet (1.5 meters) away from fuel-burning appliances to avoid false alarms from normal operation.
- On an interior wall, away from windows, doors, or vents that could interfere with readings.
- Between knee and eye level.
Avoid placing the detector:
- In direct airflow from heating/cooling vents.
- In areas with high humidity (e.g., bathrooms, laundry rooms) unless specifically designed for such environments.
- Behind curtains or furniture that could obstruct the sensor.
- In garages or areas with high levels of dust, dirt, or chemicals.

4.3 Portability for Travel
The compact design of the KH Alert KH106 makes it suitable for travel. Simply unplug and pack it for use in hotels, RVs, or other temporary accommodations with an available power outlet.

5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Display Readings
The LCD display provides real-time information:
- The top number indicates the current temperature.
- The middle number indicates the current Carbon Monoxide (CO) concentration in PPM.
- The bottom number indicates the current relative humidity (RH%).
5.2 Self-Test Function
To ensure the detector is functioning correctly, perform a self-test weekly:
- Press and hold the SELF-TEST button on the front of the device.
- The alarm will sound, and the red alarm light will flash, indicating the alarm function is working.
- Release the button to stop the test.
5.3 Alarm Conditions and Response
The detector is designed to alarm when CO gas concentration reaches dangerous levels. The alarm thresholds are typically set according to safety standards (e.g., >150ppm for this model).
When an alarm sounds:
- Do not ignore the alarm.
- Immediately move to fresh air outdoors or open all doors and windows to ventilate the area.
- Call emergency services (fire department or 911) and inform them of the CO alarm.
- Do not re-enter the premises until it has been deemed safe by emergency personnel.
- Identify and resolve the source of the CO.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your CO detector.
- Weekly Test: Perform the self-test function weekly as described in Section 5.2.
- Monthly Cleaning: Gently vacuum or wipe the exterior of the detector with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and debris. Do not use cleaning agents or solvents. Ensure the air inlets are clear.
- Avoid Obstructions: Ensure nothing is blocking the air inlet or outlet vents.
- Power Supply: Ensure the device remains continuously plugged into a working outlet. This model does not have battery backup.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Detector does not power on. | No power from outlet; device malfunction. | Check the power outlet with another appliance. If the outlet is working, the device may be faulty. |
| Alarm sounds without visible CO source. | Actual CO presence; false alarm; sensor sensitivity. | Treat all alarms as real. Follow alarm response procedures (Section 5.3). If confirmed false, check for nearby sources of combustion or strong fumes. |
| Fault light (yellow) is on. | Internal malfunction; sensor error. | Unplug the device for 30 seconds and plug it back in. If the fault light persists, the device may need replacement. |
| Display is dim or unreadable. | Protective film still on; environmental conditions. | Ensure the protective film has been removed. Avoid direct sunlight or extreme viewing angles. |
