3. Setup Guide

To begin using your Galaxy SmartTag2, ensure you have a compatible Samsung Galaxy smartphone or tablet running Android 11.0 or later with 3GB or more of free RAM. You will also need to opt-in to the SmartThings Find App and be logged into your Samsung Account.

3.1 Initial Pairing

  1. Prepare your SmartTag2: The SmartTag2 comes with a small plastic tab to prevent battery drain during shipping. Gently pull this tab out to activate the device.
  2. Open SmartThings Find: On your Samsung Galaxy device, open the SmartThings Find application. If you don't have it, download it from the Galaxy Store or Google Play Store.
  3. Add Device: The SmartThings Find app should automatically detect your new SmartTag2 and prompt you to add it. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the pairing process. This typically involves confirming the device and agreeing to terms.
  4. Registration: Ensure your SmartTag2 is registered to your Samsung Account within the SmartThings Find app.

4. Operating Your SmartTag2

Once set up, the Galaxy SmartTag2 offers several ways to help you locate your items.

4.1 Search Nearby with Compass View

When your SmartTag2 is within Bluetooth range (up to 120m without obstacles), you can use the "Search Nearby" feature in the SmartThings Find app. This will provide instructions to your item's location via Compass View, guiding you directly to it. Accuracy may be reduced if there's an obstacle between you and the tag.

4.2 Ring Your SmartTag2

If you are close to your item but still cannot see it, you can make your Galaxy SmartTag2 emit an audible signal. Simply tap the "Ring" option in the SmartThings Find app, and the tag will play a sound to help you pinpoint its exact location.

4.3 Lost Mode (NFC)

If your item is lost and out of Bluetooth range, the SmartThings Find Network can be used to track it (accuracy based on opt-in Galaxy users in range). Additionally, if Lost Mode is activated in the app, anyone who finds your SmartTag2 can tap it with their NFC-enabled smartphone (regardless of OS) to view your registered contact information and a message, helping to return your lost item.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Battery Replacement

The Galaxy SmartTag2 uses a replaceable CR2032 coin cell battery. The expected battery life is up to 500 days under typical usage conditions, and even longer (up to 40% more) in Power Saving Mode. When the battery is low, the SmartThings Find app will notify you. To replace the battery, gently open the tag's casing (refer to the Quick Start Guide for detailed instructions) and insert a new CR2032 battery, ensuring correct polarity.

5.2 Water and Dust Resistance

The SmartTag2 is IP67-rated for water and dust resistance. This means it can withstand immersion in up to 1 meter (3 feet) of water for up to 30 minutes. It is resistant to dust ingress. After exposure to water, rinse any residue and dry the device thoroughly to maintain its resistance.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2, consider the following common solutions:

  • Tag Not Connecting:
    • Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your Samsung Galaxy device.
    • Check if the SmartTag2 battery is active. If it's a new device, ensure the plastic tab has been removed. If it's an older device, the battery might need replacement.
    • Move the SmartTag2 closer to your Samsung Galaxy device.
    • Restart your Samsung Galaxy device and the SmartThings Find app.
  • Inaccurate Location:
    • Ensure your Samsung Galaxy device has a stable internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data).
    • Location services must be enabled on your phone.
    • The accuracy of the SmartThings Find Network relies on other opt-in Galaxy users. In areas with fewer Galaxy devices, tracking might be less precise.
  • Audible Signal Not Working:
    • Verify the SmartTag2 is within Bluetooth range of your device.
    • Check the battery level of the SmartTag2.
    • Ensure the volume on the SmartTag2 is not set to minimum within the SmartThings Find app.
  • Lost Mode Not Displaying Information:
    • Confirm that Lost Mode has been activated for the specific SmartTag2 in the SmartThings Find app.
    • Ensure the contact information is correctly entered in the app.
    • The device attempting to read the NFC tag must have NFC enabled and be connected to the internet.
