  2. Install Cylinder: Insert the key cylinder into the designated opening on the mortise body. Use the key to ensure it turns smoothly and then secure it. (Refer to Video 1, 0:16-0:26)
  3. Assemble Spindle and Spring: Place the spring and spindle into the square hole of the lever base. Ensure the spring is correctly seated. (Refer to Video 1, 0:27-0:45)

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Classroom Function Explained

The SOPHIA Mortise Lockset is configured with a classroom function, which means:

  • The latchbolt can always be retracted by the interior lever, allowing for emergency egress at any time.
  • The exterior lever retracts the latchbolt unless it has been locked by the key.
  • The key operates the exterior lever to lock or unlock it.
  • When the door is closed, the auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt, preventing manipulation from the outside.

5.2. Locking and Unlocking

  • To Lock from Exterior: Insert the key into the exterior cylinder and turn it to engage the locking mechanism. The exterior lever will then be rigid and will not retract the latchbolt.
  • To Unlock from Exterior: Insert the key into the exterior cylinder and turn it to disengage the locking mechanism. The exterior lever will then retract the latchbolt.
  • From Interior: The interior lever always retracts the latchbolt, allowing for immediate exit. The interior lever does not control the locking state of the exterior lever.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your SOPHIA Mortise Lockset.

  • Cleaning: Wipe the lockset surfaces periodically with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the finish.
  • Lubrication: Apply a small amount of graphite lubricant or a silicone-based spray to the key cylinder and latch mechanism annually to ensure smooth operation. Do not use oil-based lubricants as they can attract dirt.
  • Screw Tightness: Periodically check all mounting screws and tighten them if necessary to prevent loosening due to frequent use.
  • Function Check: Regularly test the lockset's function (levers, key, deadbolt) to ensure all mechanisms are operating correctly.
