TASCAM VR-01-BR 8GB IC Recorder Instruction Manual

1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the TASCAM VR-01-BR 8GB IC Recorder. This compact and portable digital voice recorder is designed for capturing high-quality audio in various environments. With its 8GB internal memory, intuitive controls, and versatile recording modes, it is an ideal tool for interviews, lectures, meetings, and personal notes. This manual will guide you through the features and functions of your new device.

2. Setup

2.1. Package Contents

Verify that all items are present in the package:

  • TASCAM VR-01-BR IC Recorder
  • USB Cable
  • Earphones (also function as FM antenna)
  • Instruction Manual (this document)

2.2. Charging the Battery

The VR-01-BR features a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Before first use, fully charge the device. Connect the recorder to a USB power source (such as a computer's USB port or an optional USB AC adapter) using the provided USB cable. The charging indicator will show the charging status. A full charge provides approximately 40 hours of continuous recording.

You can also record while the device is connected to a USB power source, ensuring uninterrupted operation for extended sessions.

2.3. Inserting a microSD Card (Optional)

The VR-01-BR has 8GB of internal memory. For expanded storage, you can insert a microSDHC card (up to 32GB, sold separately). Locate the microSD card slot on the side of the device and gently insert the card until it clicks into place. Ensure the card is inserted correctly to avoid damage.

3. Operating the Recorder

3.1. Power On/Off and Key Lock

To power on the device, slide the POWER switch to the ON position. To power off, slide it to OFF. The device also features a key lock function to prevent accidental operation during recording or transport. Slide the HOLD switch to activate or deactivate the key lock.

3.2. Basic Recording

The VR-01-BR supports one-action recording. To start recording, simply slide the REC/STOP switch to the REC position. The recording indicator will illuminate. To stop recording, slide the switch back to the STOP position. Recordings are automatically saved.

The device is equipped with three microphones, allowing for stereo recording and a dedicated interview microphone for focused audio capture. Select the appropriate recording mode based on your environment (e.g., PCM for high quality, Interview for focused speech).

3.3. Playback

To play back a recording, press the Play button. Use the navigation buttons (<< and >>) to skip between files or fast-forward/rewind within a file. Adjust the volume using the VOL + and VOL - buttons.

The VR-01-BR includes features to assist with transcription and language learning, such as A-B repeat and playback speed control. You can also use it as a memory player for WAV, MP3, AAC, and WMA files, with 7 types of playback equalizers.

3.4. Menu Navigation and Settings

The 1.2-inch LCD screen provides clear information and allows for comfortable operation. Press the MENU button to access various settings, including recording quality, microphone sensitivity, and file management. Use the navigation buttons to scroll through options and the OK button to confirm selections.

3.5. FM Radio Tuner

The VR-01-BR features an FM radio tuner (76.0MHz - 108.0MHz, Wide FM compatible). Connect the supplied earphones, which double as an FM antenna, to listen to radio broadcasts. You can also record radio programs directly to the device's memory.

3.6. External Input

The device is equipped with a 3.5mm stereo mini jack for external input. This allows you to connect an external stereo microphone (sold separately) or an audio cable for recording from other devices. This is useful for recording online calls or other audio sources.

4. Maintenance

4.1. Cleaning

Wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents, as they may damage the finish or internal components.

4.2. Storage

Store the recorder in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high humidity. Avoid storing it near strong magnetic fields.

4.3. Battery Care

To prolong battery life, avoid fully discharging the battery frequently. If storing the device for an extended period, charge it to about 50% capacity every six months.

5. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your TASCAM VR-01-BR, refer to the following common solutions:

  • Device does not power on: Ensure the battery is charged. Connect the device to a USB power source and try again. Check the POWER switch position.
  • Cannot record: Verify that the REC/STOP switch is in the REC position. Check if the key lock (HOLD switch) is engaged. Ensure there is sufficient free space on the internal memory or microSD card.
  • No sound during playback: Check the volume level. Ensure earphones are properly connected if using them. Verify that the file is not corrupted.
  • Computer does not recognize the device: Ensure the USB cable is securely connected. Try a different USB port or cable. Restart your computer.
