Introduction

This instruction manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of SONLED Insulated Tubular Crimp Terminals (Ferrules). These terminals are designed for securely connecting electrical wires, ensuring reliable and safe electrical connections. Please read this manual thoroughly before use and retain it for future reference.

Safety Information

Always observe the following safety precautions when working with electrical components:

  • Ensure power is disconnected before working on any electrical circuit.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses and insulated gloves.
  • Verify that the terminal size matches the wire gauge (AWG/mm²) to prevent improper connections.
  • Use a suitable crimping tool designed for insulated tubular terminals.
  • Inspect terminals and wires for damage before use. Do not use damaged components.
  • Consult a qualified electrician if you are unsure about any electrical work.

Product Overview

SONLED insulated tubular crimp terminals, also known as ferrules, are used to terminate stranded wires, providing a neat and secure connection point. They consist of a metal tube (ferrule) and an insulating collar. The insulating collar helps prevent flashover and provides strain relief.

These terminals are available in various sizes, each color-coded to correspond with specific wire gauges (AWG) and cross-sectional areas (mm²). This ensures proper selection for your application.

Setup and Preparation

  1. Select the Correct Terminal: Choose a ferrule that matches the wire's gauge (AWG or mm²) and the application's current requirements. Refer to the specifications table for guidance.
  2. Strip the Wire: Carefully strip the insulation from the end of the wire, exposing the conductor. The stripped length should be equal to the metal tube length (F dimension) of the ferrule. Avoid cutting or nicking the wire strands.
  3. Insert the Wire: Twist the exposed wire strands lightly to keep them together. Insert the twisted wire completely into the metal tube of the ferrule until the insulation meets the plastic collar. Ensure no stray strands are outside the ferrule.

Operating Instructions (Crimping)

To achieve a secure and reliable connection, use a dedicated crimping tool designed for insulated tubular terminals (ferrules).

  1. Position the Ferrule: Open the crimping tool and place the ferrule (with the wire inserted) into the appropriate crimping die slot. The metal tube of the ferrule should be fully seated within the die.
  2. Crimp the Terminal: Squeeze the handles of the crimping tool firmly and completely until the crimp cycle is finished. Most quality crimping tools have a ratchet mechanism that prevents the handles from releasing until a full crimp is achieved.
  3. Inspect the Crimp: After crimping, release the handles and remove the crimped terminal. Visually inspect the crimp for proper formation. The ferrule should be securely compressed around the wire strands. Gently tug on the wire to ensure it is firmly held by the ferrule. The insulation collar should remain intact.

Maintenance

SONLED insulated tubular crimp terminals require minimal maintenance. Store them in a dry, clean environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, to prevent degradation of the insulation material and corrosion of the metal ferrules. Ensure they are kept in their original packaging or a suitable storage container to prevent mixing of sizes.

Troubleshooting

  • Loose Connection: If the wire pulls out easily after crimping, the terminal may be too large for the wire, or the crimping tool was not fully closed. Re-evaluate the terminal size and ensure a complete crimp.
  • Damaged Insulation: If the insulation collar is damaged during crimping, the crimping die might be too small, or the wire was inserted incorrectly. Ensure the correct die size is used and the wire is properly seated.
  • Wire Strands Not Fully Contained: If wire strands are visible outside the ferrule after insertion, the wire was not stripped to the correct length or not fully inserted. Re-strip and re-insert the wire.
