3. Setup and Installation

Proper installation of the bobbin case is critical for smooth sewing operation. Always ensure your sewing machine is turned off and unplugged before attempting any installation or maintenance.

1. Power Off: Turn off and unplug your Brother sewing machine from the power outlet.
2. Access Bobbin Area: Open the bobbin cover or access panel on your sewing machine, typically located beneath the needle plate.

4. Operation

Once the bobbin case is installed, follow these steps to prepare it for sewing:

1. Wind Bobbin: Wind your bobbin with the desired thread according to your sewing machine's instructions. Ensure the bobbin is wound evenly and not overfilled.
2. Insert Bobbin into Case: Hold the bobbin case with one hand. Place the wound bobbin into the bobbin case. The thread should unwind in the correct direction (usually counter-clockwise when viewed from the top, but refer to your machine's manual).
3. Thread Bobbin Case: Guide the bobbin thread through the tension spring slot on the side of the bobbin case. Pull the thread firmly until it slips under the tension spring and emerges from the small opening.
4. Check Tension: Gently pull on the thread. There should be a slight, consistent resistance. If the thread pulls too easily or is too tight, the tension may need adjustment (though typically the bobbin case tension is factory set).

6. Bring Up Bobbin Thread: With the needle threaded, hold the needle thread lightly and turn the handwheel towards you to lower the needle into the needle plate and then bring it back up. This action should catch the bobbin thread, forming a loop. Pull both threads to the back of the machine before starting to sew.

• Cleaning: Periodically remove the bobbin case from the machine. Use a small brush or lint roller to remove any lint, dust, or thread scraps that may accumulate around the tension spring or inside the case. Accumulated debris can affect thread tension and cause stitching problems.
• Inspection: Visually inspect the bobbin case for any signs of damage, such as nicks, burrs, or bends, especially on the edges where the thread passes. Even minor damage can snag thread and lead to poor stitch quality. If damage is found, replacement may be necessary.
• Lubrication: Consult your sewing machine's manual regarding lubrication of the bobbin area. Some machines require a drop of sewing machine oil in specific points around the bobbin housing. Do not apply oil directly to the bobbin case unless specifically instructed, as it can attract lint.
• Storage: When not in use for extended periods, store the bobbin case in a clean, dry place to prevent dust accumulation and corrosion.
