2. Setup Guide

2.1. Unboxing and Initial Inspection

Upon unboxing the Synology DS224+, ensure all components are present. The package typically includes the NAS unit, a power adapter, two Cat5e Ethernet cables, and a bag of screws for 2.5-inch drive installation.

2.2. RAM Upgrade (Optional)

The DS224+ supports RAM upgrades up to 6GB. To install additional RAM:

  1. Carefully remove the front cover plate of the NAS. It is held in place by four rubber grommets.
  2. Locate the RAM slot inside the device.
  3. Insert the RAM module at approximately a 45-degree angle into the slot.
  4. Gently press down on the RAM module until it seats properly and the retaining clips snap into place, securing the module.

2.3. Hard Drive Installation

The DS224+ is a 2-bay diskless unit, requiring the installation of hard drives (HDDs) or solid-state drives (SSDs) for storage. Ensure drives are compatible with the DS224+ model.

  1. Press the latch at the top of a drive bay and pull out the empty drive tray.
  2. For 3.5-inch HDDs: Secure the drive into the tray using the provided sidebars. These sidebars have pins that extend into the drive's side screw holes, and rubber grommets help isolate vibrations.
  3. For 2.5-inch SSDs/HDDs: Place the drive into the tray and secure it using the screws provided in the accessory bag.
  4. Carefully slide the filled drive tray back into the drive bay until it clicks into place.
  5. Repeat for the second drive bay.
  6. Reattach the front cover plate by aligning it and gently pressing the corners until the grommets seat into the case.

2.4. Initial Power-On and DSM Setup

Once the hardware is assembled, proceed with the initial software setup:

  1. Connect the power adapter to the NAS and plug it into a power outlet.
  2. Connect the NAS to your network router or switch using one of the provided Ethernet cables.
  3. Press the power button on the front of the NAS.
  4. Open a web browser on a computer connected to the same network and navigate to http://find.synology.com to locate your Synology NAS.
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to install Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM), the operating system for your NAS. This process will format the drives, so ensure they are empty or backed up.
  6. Create a device name and an administrator account with a strong password.
  7. Configure the storage pool:
    • Select the RAID type. Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) is recommended for beginners as it offers flexibility and data redundancy. For a 2-bay NAS, SHR provides mirroring (similar to RAID 1).
    • Select the drives to be included in the storage pool.
    • Perform a drive check to ensure drive integrity (recommended).
    • Allocate the desired volume capacity. For SHR with two drives, the usable capacity will be that of a single drive (e.g., two 12TB drives will yield 12TB usable capacity with redundancy).
    • Choose the file system. Btrfs is recommended for its advanced features like shared folder snapshots, replication, and data integrity protection.
  8. Confirm settings and apply. The system will begin creating the storage pool and volume.

3. Operating Your Synology DS224+

  • Drive Health Monitoring: Regularly check the health status of your installed drives through the Storage Manager in DSM.
  • Power Consumption: The DS224+ is designed to be energy-efficient, consuming approximately 15 watts of power. Ensure proper ventilation to prevent overheating.

5. Troubleshooting

Should you encounter issues with your Synology DS224+, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • DSM Installation Issues: If the NAS does not reboot automatically during DSM installation, manually press the power button to restart the device. The installation process should resume from where it left off.
  • Network Connectivity: Ensure Ethernet cables are securely connected to both the NAS and your network device. Verify network settings in DSM if accessible.
  • Drive Recognition: If drives are not recognized, ensure they are properly seated in their trays and the trays are fully inserted into the bays. Check drive compatibility with the DS224+.
  • Performance Issues: Monitor system resources (CPU, RAM, network usage) through DSM's Resource Monitor. Ensure sufficient RAM for demanding applications.
