Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to properly install your Thermalright TL-C12C-S X3 fans into your computer system.

1. Fan Orientation and Airflow

It is crucial to install your fans with the correct airflow direction for optimal cooling. The TL-C12C-S X3 fans are designed with a specific intake and exhaust side:

  • Blade Side: This side is the intake. Air flows into the fan from this side.
  • Frame Side (with label): This side is the exhaust. Air is pushed out from this side.

Install your fans according to your case's airflow direction requirements (e.g., front fans typically intake, rear/top fans typically exhaust).

2. Physical Installation

  1. Position the fan in the desired mounting location within your PC case or on your CPU cooler/radiator.
  2. Align the screw holes on the fan with the mounting holes on your case or cooler.
  3. Secure the fan using the provided screws. Ensure they are tightened firmly but do not overtighten to avoid damaging the fan frame.

3. Connecting Power (PWM)

The TL-C12C-S X3 fans use a 4-pin PWM connector for power and speed control.

  • Locate an available 4-pin fan header on your motherboard (e.g., "CHA_FAN" or "CPU_FAN").
  • Connect the 4-pin PWM power cable from the fan to the motherboard fan socket.
  • If installing multiple fans, use the provided PWM splitter cables to daisy-chain them. Ensure the total number of fans connected to a single header does not exceed the motherboard's power rating (typically 1A per header, check your motherboard manual). The total number of fans connected in series should be less than three per header for optimal performance.

4. Connecting ARGB Lighting

For Addressable RGB (ARGB) lighting control, the fans use a 3-pin 5V ARGB connector.

  • Locate an available 3-pin 5V ARGB header on your motherboard (often labeled "ARGB_HEADER" or "5V_RGB"). Do NOT connect to a 4-pin 12V RGB header, as this will damage the LEDs.
  • Connect the 3-pin ARGB lighting cable from the fan to the motherboard ARGB socket.
  • If installing multiple fans, use the provided ARGB splitter cables to daisy-chain them. The total number of ARGB components connected in series should be less than five per header for stable lighting effects.

Operation

Fan Speed Control (PWM)

The 4-pin PWM connector allows your motherboard to automatically control the fan speed based on system temperature. This ensures optimal cooling performance when needed and quiet operation during lighter loads.

  • Access your motherboard's BIOS/UEFI settings or use compatible software provided by your motherboard manufacturer (e.g., ASUS AI Suite, MSI Dragon Center, Gigabyte SIV) to configure fan curves.
  • Adjust the fan curve to set desired RPMs at different temperature thresholds.

ARGB Lighting Control

The ARGB lighting can be controlled and synchronized with other compatible components through your motherboard's software.

  • Install the lighting control software provided by your motherboard manufacturer (e.g., ASUS Aura Sync, MSI Mystic Light Sync, Gigabyte RGB Fusion, ASRock Polychrome Sync).
  • Use the software to select from 17 different lighting modes, customize colors, and synchronize effects across all connected ARGB devices.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance helps ensure optimal performance and longevity of your fans.

  • Dust Cleaning: Periodically clean dust accumulation from the fan blades and frame using compressed air or a soft brush. Ensure the system is powered off before cleaning.
  • Bearing Care: The S-FDB bearing is designed to be maintenance-free. Do not attempt to disassemble the fan or lubricate the bearing, as this may void the warranty and damage the product.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible Solution
Fan not spinning
  • Check if the 4-pin PWM cable is securely connected to the motherboard fan header.
  • Ensure the fan header on the motherboard is enabled in BIOS/UEFI settings.
  • Test the fan on a different fan header or with a fan tester if available.
ARGB lighting not working
  • Verify the 3-pin 5V ARGB cable is correctly connected to a 5V ARGB header on the motherboard (not a 12V RGB header).
  • Ensure the ARGB header is enabled in your motherboard's BIOS/UEFI.
  • Check your motherboard's ARGB control software for lighting settings.
  • If daisy-chaining, ensure the total number of ARGB components does not exceed the header's limit.
Fan is too loud
  • Adjust the fan curve in your motherboard's BIOS/UEFI or software to lower RPMs at idle or low load.
  • Ensure no cables or obstructions are hitting the fan blades.
  • Check for excessive dust buildup on the fan blades.
Poor cooling performance
  • Verify the fan's airflow direction is correct for its mounting location (intake vs. exhaust).
  • Ensure sufficient airflow within the PC case and that other components are not obstructing air paths.
  • Clean any dust from the fan blades and heatsink/radiator fins.
