5. Setup
5.1 Battery Installation/Replacement
The Hicks Digital Thermometer DMT-102 is powered by a button cell battery. If the display shows a low battery indicator or does not turn on, the battery may need replacement.
- Locate the battery compartment cover, typically at the end opposite the probe.
- Carefully slide or unscrew the cover to open the compartment.
- Remove the old battery (if present) and insert a new button cell battery (e.g., LR41 or SR41) with the positive (+) side facing up.
- Replace the battery compartment cover securely.
5.2 Initial Power On
Press the power button to turn on the thermometer. A short beep will sound, and the display will briefly show all segments, followed by the last measured temperature (if any), and then 'Lo' with a flashing '°C' or '°F' indicating it is ready for measurement.
6. Operating Instructions
6.1 Taking a Temperature Measurement
Ensure the thermometer is clean before use. Press the power button to turn it on.
- Oral Use: Place the probe tip under the tongue as close to the heat pocket as possible. Keep the mouth closed during measurement.
- Rectal Use: Lubricate the probe tip with a water-soluble jelly. Gently insert the tip no more than 1/2 inch into the rectum. This method is generally recommended for infants and young children.
- Underarm (Axillary) Use: Place the probe tip in the center of the armpit, ensuring good skin contact. Hold the arm firmly against the body. This method is less accurate than oral or rectal measurements.
Hold the thermometer in place until the beeper sounds, indicating the measurement is complete and stable. The temperature reading will then be displayed.
6.2 Reading the Display
The temperature will be shown on the digital display. The unit of measurement (°C or °F) will be indicated. The beeper will sound when the peak temperature is reached.
6.3 Automatic Shut-off
The thermometer will automatically shut off after approximately 10 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery life. You can also manually turn it off by pressing the power button.
7. Memory Function
The Hicks Digital Thermometer DMT-102 stores the last measured temperature. To recall the last reading:
- With the thermometer off, press and hold the power button for approximately 2 seconds.
- The display will show the last recorded temperature before proceeding to the 'Lo' ready state.
8. Care and Maintenance
8.1 Cleaning and Disinfection
After each use, especially for oral or rectal measurements, clean the thermometer probe. Wipe the probe tip with a soft cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl alcohol) or an antiseptic solution. Do not immerse the entire thermometer in water or any cleaning solution. The device is designed for 'Wipe Clean' care.
8.2 Storage
Store the thermometer in its protective case when not in use. Keep it in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and out of reach of children.
9. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No display when powered on | Dead battery or incorrect battery insertion. | Replace the battery, ensuring correct polarity. |
| 'Lo' displayed but not ready for measurement | Ambient temperature is below the measurement range. | Ensure the thermometer is at room temperature before use. |
| 'Err' displayed | Measurement error or device malfunction. | Turn off the thermometer, wait a few minutes, and try again. If the error persists, contact customer support. |
| Inaccurate readings | Improper placement, movement during measurement, or dirty probe. | Ensure correct placement, remain still during measurement, and clean the probe thoroughly. |
