Nascool Digital Peak Flow Meter (Model SMPF-2D) User Manual

1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the proper use and maintenance of your Nascool Digital Peak Flow Meter, Model SMPF-2D. This device is designed to measure Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) and Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second (FEV1), which are important indicators for monitoring respiratory conditions such as asthma. Please read this manual thoroughly before first use to ensure accurate readings and safe operation.

3. Setup

3.1 Charging the Device

Before first use, charge the device for approximately 2 hours using the provided USB-C cable and a 5V adapter (not included). The battery icon on the display will indicate when charging is needed.

3.2 Setting Expected PEF Value

Setting your personal expected PEF value is crucial for the device's risk indicator to function correctly. You can set this value via the ePEF App or manually on the device.

Option A: App Setup (Recommended)

1. Settings: Open the ePEF App menu.

2. Input: Enter a doctor's value or use the auto-calculation feature by inputting your age, height, and weight.

3. Sync: Connect the device via Bluetooth to update your expected value instantly.

Option B: Manual Setup

1. Ensure the device is powered off.

2. Press and hold the Home Button for about 5 seconds until the digits flash, indicating parameter setting mode.

3. Use the Left (-) and Right (+) buttons to adjust the flashing digit.

4. Press the Home Button to move to the next digit.

5. Once all digits are set, press and hold the Home Button for about 3 seconds to save the value.

3.3 Setting Date and Time

To ensure accurate record-keeping, set the correct date and time on your device.

1. Press the Home Button to turn on the device. The screen will display "go-".

2. Press and hold the Home Button and the Left (-) Button simultaneously for about 5 seconds. The year figure will start to flash at the top of the screen.

3. Use the Left (-) and Right (+) buttons to adjust the year.

4. Press the Home Button to move to the next segment (month, day, hour, minute) and adjust each using the Left (-) and Right (+) buttons.

5. Once all segments are set, press and hold the Home Button for about 5 seconds to save the date and time settings.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 How to Take a Measurement

  1. Power On: Press the Home Button. The device will display "go-" on the screen.
  2. Prepare: Sit or stand upright. Take a deep breath with your mouth. Cover the mouthpiece completely with your mouth, ensuring your tongue or teeth are not against the mouthpiece and you are not covering the back of the mouthpiece with your hand.
  3. Start: Blow out as fast and as hard as you can. Wait for 2 beeps from the device before reading the result.
  4. Repeat: For consistent results, it is recommended to perform at least three consecutive measurements. Take the maximum value as your final result. Press the Home Button again to re-measure.

4.2 Understanding the Risk Indicator

The device features a color-coded risk indicator to help you quickly assess your lung function control condition. This indicator is based on your personalized expected PEF value.

  • Green Zone (Above 80% of Expected PEF): Indicates good control. Your lung function is within a healthy range.
  • Yellow Zone (50% – 80% of Expected PEF): Caution is needed. Your airways may be narrowing. Monitor closely and follow your healthcare provider's advice.
  • Red Zone (Below 50% of Expected PEF): This is an emergency level. Contact your doctor or emergency services right away.

Note: No risk indicator will be displayed on the device without properly setting the expected value.

5. Data Management

5.1 Connecting to the ePEF App

The Nascool Digital Peak Flow Meter can connect to the ePEF tracking App via Bluetooth. This allows for automatic data synchronization, trend visualization, and easy sharing of progress reports with caregivers.

1. Download the ePEF App from the App Store or Google Play. You can find the download link here: https://www.sonmolmed.com/download_ePEF.html

2. Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your smartphone.

3. Open the ePEF App and follow the on-screen instructions to pair your device.

4. Once connected, data will automatically sync to your mobile phone.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning the Mouthpiece

The mouthpieces are removable and washable. To clean, simply wipe them with alcohol or wash with mild soap and water. Ensure they are completely dry before reattaching to the device. This helps prevent the accumulation of contaminants and maintains hygiene.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Nascool Digital Peak Flow Meter, please refer to the following common solutions:

  • Device not turning on: Ensure the device is fully charged. Connect it to a 5V adapter using the USB-C cable.
  • Inaccurate readings: Verify that the mouthpiece is properly sealed around your mouth and that your tongue or teeth are not obstructing the airflow. Ensure you are blowing out as fast and hard as possible.
  • No risk indicator displayed: Confirm that you have correctly set your expected PEF value, either manually on the device or via the ePEF App.
  • Bluetooth connection issues: Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone and the device is within range. Restart both the device and the app, then attempt to reconnect.
  • App data sync problems: Check your internet connection. Ensure the app is updated to the latest version. If issues persist, try reinstalling the app (note: this may delete local data not yet synced).
