1. Product Overview
The Origin Effects DCX Bass Tone Shaper & Drive Pedal is an analog effects unit designed for bass guitar. It provides tone shaping and drive capabilities, drawing inspiration from classic studio mic preamps. The pedal features dedicated controls for level, EQ, and drive, along with proprietary Adaptive Circuitry that responds to playing dynamics, offering a versatile tool for bassists.

2. Key Features
- Bass Guitar Preamp Pedal with Adaptive Circuitry for dynamic response.
- Variable Voice Control to adjust the tonal character.
- EQ Overdrive Modes for diverse sound sculpting and saturation.
- All-analog signal path for authentic tone.
- Durable stainless steel enclosure.
3. Setup Instructions
Follow these steps to set up your DCX Bass pedal:
- Power Connection: Connect a standard 9V DC power supply (center-negative, 2.1mm barrel connector) to the 9VDC input jack on the pedal. Ensure the power supply meets the pedal's requirements.
- Instrument Input: Connect your bass guitar to the INSTR input jack on the right side of the pedal using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
- Amplifier Output: Connect the AMP output jack on the left side of the pedal to your bass amplifier's input using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
- Initial Settings: Before powering on, set all control knobs (LEVEL, L.F., H.F., DRIVE) to their minimum positions (fully counter-clockwise). Set the MODE switch to EQ and the VOICE switch to FLAT.
- Power On: Once all connections are secure, apply power to the pedal. The LED indicator will illuminate when the pedal is active.

4. Operating the Pedal
The DCX Bass pedal is activated by pressing the footswitch. When active, the LED will light up. Press the footswitch again to bypass the effect. Adjust the controls as described in the "Controls Overview" section to achieve your desired tone.
4.1. Basic Tone Shaping
Start with the MODE switch in the EQ position and the VOICE switch in FLAT. Use the L.F. and H.F. knobs to adjust the low and high frequencies, respectively. The LEVEL knob controls the overall output volume.
4.2. Adding Drive
To introduce overdrive, switch the MODE to OD. The DRIVE knob will then control the amount of saturation. Experiment with the L.F. and H.F. controls in conjunction with the DRIVE to shape the character of the overdrive.
4.3. Voice Control
The VOICE switch offers three distinct tonal characters: DRK (Dark), FLAT, and MED (Mid-range emphasis). Select the setting that best suits your playing style and desired sound.
5. Controls Overview

Figure 3: Detailed view of the DCX Bass pedal's control panel.
- LEVEL Knob: Controls the overall output volume of the pedal. Turn clockwise to increase volume, counter-clockwise to decrease.
- L.F. Knob: Adjusts the low-frequency response. This control is active in both EQ and OD modes, allowing for bass shaping.
- H.F. Knob: Adjusts the high-frequency response. This control is active in both EQ and OD modes, providing treble shaping.
- DRIVE Knob: Controls the amount of overdrive/saturation when the MODE switch is set to OD. Turn clockwise for more distortion.
- MODE Switch (EQ/OD):
- EQ: Engages the tone shaping section without overdrive.
- OD: Engages the overdrive circuit, allowing the DRIVE knob to become active.
- VOICE Switch (DRK/FLAT/MED): Selects between three distinct tonal voicings.
- DRK (Dark): Provides a warmer, darker tone.
- FLAT: Offers a neutral, uncolored tone.
- MED (Mid): Emphasizes mid-range frequencies for increased presence.
- Footswitch: Toggles the pedal effect on and off.
- LED Indicator: Illuminates when the pedal is active.
- INSTR Input: 1/4-inch jack for connecting your bass guitar.
- AMP Output: 1/4-inch jack for connecting to your amplifier.
- 9VDC Input: Power input for a 9V DC center-negative power supply.
6. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the pedal's exterior. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the pedal in a dry environment, away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
- Power Supply: Always use a regulated 9V DC center-negative power supply to prevent damage. Disconnect power when not in use for extended periods.
- Jacks and Knobs: Periodically check all jacks and knobs for any looseness. Do not overtighten.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No sound when pedal is active. | Incorrect cable connections, faulty cables, no power, pedal in bypass mode. | Check all instrument and power cables. Ensure the power supply is connected and functional. Press the footswitch to engage the effect (LED should be on). |
| Weak or distorted sound. | Incorrect knob settings, impedance mismatch. | Adjust LEVEL, L.F., H.F., and DRIVE knobs. Ensure your amplifier input is appropriate for instrument level signals. |
| Pedal not powering on. | No power supply connected, faulty power supply, incorrect power supply type. | Verify the 9V DC center-negative power supply is correctly connected and working. Try a different compatible power supply if available. |
