Cole Parmer Masterflex Variable Speed Peristaltic Pump 7553-50 User Manual

Model: 7553-50

1. Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the safe and efficient operation, setup, and maintenance of the Cole Parmer Masterflex Variable Speed Peristaltic Pump, Model 7553-50. This pump is designed for precise fluid transfer in laboratory and industrial applications, utilizing a peristaltic mechanism to move fluids through tubing without contact with pump components.

2. Safety Information

Read all safety instructions before operating the pump. Failure to follow these instructions may result in injury or damage to the equipment.

  • Electrical Safety: Ensure the pump is connected to a grounded power outlet with the correct voltage (115 VAC, 50/60 Hz). Do not operate with damaged power cords.
  • Chemical Compatibility: Verify that the tubing material is compatible with the fluid being pumped. Incompatible materials can lead to tubing failure and chemical spills.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear appropriate PPE, such as safety glasses and gloves, when handling chemicals or operating the pump.
  • Stable Placement: Position the pump on a stable, level surface to prevent tipping during operation.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation around the pump to prevent overheating.
  • Emergency Stop: Familiarize yourself with the power switch location for quick shutdown in an emergency.

3. Setup

3.1 Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully remove the pump from its packaging. Inspect the unit for any visible damage. Report any damage to your supplier immediately.

3.2 Placement

Place the pump on a clean, dry, and stable surface. Ensure there is sufficient space around the unit for ventilation and access to controls and connections.

3.3 Power Connection

Connect the power cord to the pump's power inlet and then to a grounded 115 VAC, 50/60 Hz electrical outlet. Refer to the label on the back of the unit for specific electrical requirements.

4.2 Adjusting Pump Speed

The pump features a variable speed control knob. Rotate the knob clockwise to increase the flow rate and counter-clockwise to decrease it. Start at a lower speed and gradually increase to the desired flow rate.

4.3 Powering Off

To stop the pump, turn the speed control knob to its minimum setting, then flip the power switch to the 'OFF' position. Disconnect the power cord from the outlet if the pump will not be used for an extended period.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

Regularly clean the exterior of the pump with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the finish. Ensure no liquids enter the internal components.

5.2 Tubing Replacement

Peristaltic tubing has a limited lifespan and should be replaced periodically, depending on usage and fluid type. Replace tubing when it shows signs of wear, cracking, or loss of elasticity to maintain accurate flow and prevent leaks.

5.3 General Inspection

Periodically inspect the pump head rollers and housing for any debris or wear. Ensure all connections are secure.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Pump does not power on:
    • Check if the power cord is securely plugged into both the pump and the electrical outlet.
    • Verify that the electrical outlet is functional.
    • Check the fuse (refer to specifications for fuse type).
  • No fluid flow:
    • Ensure tubing is correctly installed in the pump head.
    • Check for kinks or blockages in the tubing.
    • Verify that the fluid source is not empty and the destination is not blocked.
    • Inspect tubing for wear; replace if necessary.
  • Inconsistent flow:
    • Ensure tubing is properly seated and tensioned in the pump head.
    • Check for air bubbles in the fluid line.
    • Replace worn tubing.
