Shimano PD-RS500 SPD-SL Road Pedal Instruction Manual
Model: PD-RS500
Product Overview
The Shimano PD-RS500 SPD-SL Road Pedal is designed for recreational and beginner road cyclists, offering a user-friendly experience with efficient power transfer. These black, aluminum pedals are compatible with SPD-SL 3-bolt cleats.
Key Features:
- User-friendly Design: SPD-SL / 3-bolt cleat compatible, ideal for recreational and beginner riders.
- Easy Engagement and Release: Features lighter spring tension and a larger entry target for effortless clipping in and out.
- Efficient Power Transfer: An extra-wide platform ensures efficient transfer of pedaling effort.
- Confident Off the Bike: Wide, low-profile cleats make walking easier.
- Durable Construction: Incorporates trickle-down technology from higher-end models, ensuring reliability.
Setup and Installation
Installing Pedals on Your Bicycle:
To install the PD-RS500 pedals, you will need a 15mm pedal wrench or a 6mm hex key. Apply a small amount of grease to the pedal threads before installation to prevent seizing and allow for easier removal in the future. The right pedal (marked 'R') tightens clockwise, and the left pedal (marked 'L') tightens counter-clockwise (reverse thread). Ensure pedals are securely tightened to prevent loosening during use.

Installing Cleats on Your Cycling Shoes:
The PD-RS500 pedals come with SPD-SL 3-bolt cleats (typically yellow for 6 degrees of float). These cleats attach to compatible road cycling shoes using three screws. Position the cleats to align with the ball of your foot for optimal power transfer and comfort. Adjust the cleat position slightly to find your preferred float and foot angle. Ensure all three screws are tightened securely.

Operating Instructions
Clipping In:
To clip into the pedal, align the front part of your cleat with the front hook of the pedal. Push down firmly with your heel until you hear a click. The larger entry target and lighter spring tension of the PD-RS500 make this process easier for new users.
Clipping Out:
To unclip, twist your heel outwards away from the bicycle. The lighter spring tension allows for a smooth and quick release. Practice clipping in and out in a safe, stationary environment before riding on the road.
Adjusting Spring Tension:
The pedal features an adjustable spring tension mechanism, typically located at the rear of the pedal body. Use a hex key to adjust the tension. A lower tension setting makes it easier to clip in and out, which is recommended for beginners. Increase tension as you gain confidence and prefer a more secure connection.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your PD-RS500 pedals. Keep the pedal body and cleat area clean from dirt and debris. Periodically check the cleat screws for tightness and replace worn cleats to maintain secure engagement.
Lubrication:
Apply a small amount of grease to the pedal threads when installing or re-installing the pedals. While the internal bearings are generally maintenance-free for extended periods, some users may choose to re-grease them periodically. Consult a professional bike mechanic for advanced bearing maintenance.
Wear and Tear:
The pedals feature stainless steel body plates in high-wear areas to reduce flex and wear, contributing to their durability. However, cleats are consumable items and will wear down with use, especially from walking. Replace cleats when they show significant wear to ensure proper engagement and release.
Troubleshooting
- Difficulty Clipping In/Out:
- Check spring tension: Lower the tension for easier engagement/release.
- Inspect cleats: Ensure cleats are not excessively worn or damaged. Replace if necessary.
- Clean pedals/cleats: Remove any dirt or debris that might obstruct engagement.
- Pedals Feel Loose:
- Check pedal installation: Ensure pedals are securely tightened to the crank arms.
- Check cleat screws: Verify that the cleat screws on your shoes are tight.
- Unwanted Release:
- Increase spring tension: A higher tension setting provides a more secure hold.
- Inspect cleats: Worn cleats can lead to premature release. Replace if worn.
