5. Setup and Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the optimal performance of your water filter system. It is recommended to install the system on the main water line entering your house.

5.1 Pre-Installation Checklist

  • Ensure all components listed in Section 3 are present.
  • Turn off the main water supply to your house.
  • Drain water from the pipes by opening a faucet at the lowest point in your house.
  • Choose a suitable location for installation, preferably in a dry, level area, protected from freezing temperatures and direct sunlight. Ensure at least 4 inches of clearance below the housing for filter changes.

5.2 Installation Steps

  1. Mount the Bracket: Use the provided heavy-duty steel mounting bracket and screws to securely attach the filter housing to a sturdy wall or support structure. Ensure it is level.
  2. Connect Plumbing: Connect your main water line to the 1" NPT inlet and outlet ports of the filter housing. Use appropriate plumbing fittings and a reliable sealant (e.g., liquid Teflon or high-quality thread tape specifically designed for your pipe material) to prevent leaks. Note: Some users have found liquid Teflon more effective than standard Teflon tape for brass threads.
  3. Insert Filter Cartridge: Ensure the PPW10BB-SZ filter cartridge is correctly seated inside the housing. Verify that the O-rings are properly positioned in their grooves on the housing and are clean and lubricated (with food-grade silicone grease if available) to ensure a watertight seal.
  4. Tighten Housing: Hand-tighten the filter housing onto the cap. Then, use the provided filter wrench to give it an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn to ensure a snug fit. Do not overtighten.
  5. Restore Water Supply: Slowly turn on the main water supply. Check for any leaks around the connections and the housing. If leaks occur, turn off the water, relieve pressure using the red button, and re-tighten connections or re-seat O-rings.
  6. Flush the System: Open a nearby cold water faucet and let the water run for 5-10 minutes to flush out any air and fine particles from the new filter. The water may appear cloudy initially; this is normal.

6. Operating Instructions

Once installed, the PUREPLUS Whole House Water Filter System operates continuously to filter your incoming water supply. No special actions are required for daily operation.

6.1 Monitoring Water Pressure

The integrated pressure gauge on the filter housing allows you to monitor the water pressure. A significant drop in pressure can indicate that the filter cartridge is becoming clogged and may need replacement. Refer to the gauge regularly to understand your system's normal operating pressure and identify potential issues early.

7. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and effectiveness of your PUREPLUS water filter system.

7.1 Filter Cartridge Replacement

The PPW10BB-SZ filter cartridge should be replaced every 3-6 months, or sooner if you notice a significant drop in water pressure or a decline in water quality. Replacement frequency depends on your water quality and usage.

  1. Turn Off Water: Shut off the main water supply to the filter system.
  2. Relieve Pressure: Press the red pressure release button on top of the filter housing to relieve internal pressure.
  3. Unscrew Housing: Use the filter wrench to unscrew the filter housing. Carefully lower the housing, as it will contain water.
  4. Remove Old Cartridge: Remove the old filter cartridge and discard it.
  5. Clean Housing: Clean the inside of the filter housing with warm, soapy water and a non-abrasive brush. Rinse thoroughly. Inspect and clean the O-rings, replacing them if they appear worn or damaged. Lubricate O-rings with food-grade silicone grease.
  6. Insert New Cartridge: Place a new PUREPLUS PPW10BB-SZ filter cartridge (or other compatible 10" x 4.5" cartridge) into the housing, ensuring it is properly centered.
  7. Reassemble: Screw the housing back onto the cap, hand-tightening first, then using the wrench for an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn. Do not overtighten.
  8. Restore Water and Flush: Slowly turn on the main water supply and check for leaks. Flush the system by running a cold water faucet for 5-10 minutes to remove air and carbon fines.

7.2 Filter Regeneration (for Iron/Manganese Removal)

The iron and manganese removal media in the PPW10BB-SZ filter cartridge can be regenerated to restore its function. This process involves soaking the filter in a sodium chloride solution.

  1. Remove Filter: Follow steps 1-4 from the filter cartridge replacement instructions to remove the filter cartridge from the housing.
  2. Prepare Solution: Prepare a 5%-8% sodium chloride (salt) solution. This can be done by dissolving 50-80 grams of non-iodized salt per liter of water.
  3. Soak Filter: Submerge the filter cartridge completely in the salt solution for 12 hours. Ensure the filter is fully immersed.
  4. Rinse Filter: After soaking, thoroughly rinse the filter cartridge with clean water to remove any residual salt solution.
  5. Reinstall Filter: Reinstall the regenerated filter cartridge into the housing, following steps 6-8 from the filter cartridge replacement instructions.
