1. Introduction
The MD-3030 Professional Metal Detector is designed for efficient and accurate detection of various metal objects underground. Featuring an LCD display, three-tone audio discrimination, and a waterproof search coil, this device is suitable for both novice and experienced treasure hunters. Its adjustable shaft ensures comfortable use for different users.
This manual provides detailed instructions on how to assemble, operate, and maintain your MD-3030 metal detector to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
2. Safety Precautions
- Always operate the metal detector in a safe environment, away from live electrical wires or hazardous materials.
- Do not use the detector in the rain or expose the control box to water. Only the search coil is waterproof.
- Ensure batteries are inserted with correct polarity. Remove batteries if the detector will not be used for an extended period.
- Avoid using the detector near strong electromagnetic fields, which may interfere with its operation.
- Always obtain permission before detecting on private property.
- Be aware of local regulations regarding metal detecting.
3. Package Contents
Upon opening the package, verify that all components are present and in good condition:

4. Product Components
Familiarize yourself with the main parts of your MD-3030 metal detector:
- Control Box: Houses the LCD display, control buttons, and battery compartment.
- Stem: Connects the control box to the search coil. Its length is adjustable for user comfort.
- Armrest: Provides support and comfort during extended use.
- Search Coil: The primary sensor that detects metal objects. This coil is waterproof.

5. Assembly Instructions
Follow these steps to assemble your MD-3030 Metal Detector:
- Attach the Search Coil: Connect the search coil to the lower stem using the provided fastening knob and washer. Ensure it is securely tightened but do not overtighten.
- Connect the Stems: Slide the lower stem into the upper stem. Adjust the length to a comfortable position and secure it with the locking collar.
- Mount the Control Unit: Attach the control unit to the top of the upper stem. Ensure it clicks into place or is secured by any provided fasteners.
- Wrap the Cable: Carefully wrap the search coil cable around the stem, ensuring it is not pinched or strained. Plug the cable connector into the corresponding port on the control unit.
- Install Batteries: Open the battery compartment on the control unit. Insert two (2) 9-volt alkaline batteries (not supplied), observing the correct polarity (+/-). Close the compartment securely.

6. Operating Instructions
6.1 Powering On/Off
To power on the detector, rotate the VOLUME knob clockwise until you hear a click. To power off, rotate the VOLUME knob counter-clockwise until it clicks off.
6.2 Understanding the LCD Display
The LCD display provides crucial information during detection:
- Target ID Cursor: Arrows indicate possible metal types.
- Target Depth: Shows the approximate depth of the detected object.
- DISC/NOTCH Range: Displays the current discrimination settings.
- SENS Level: Indicates the current sensitivity setting.
- Battery Status: Shows the remaining battery life.
- Digital Display: Provides numerical values for DISC and TARGET.
6.3 Adjusting Settings
- DISC (Discrimination): Use the 'DISC' button and '+' / '-' buttons to set the discrimination level. This allows the detector to ignore certain types of metal (e.g., iron) and focus on more valuable targets.
- NOTCH: Use the 'NOTCH' button to select specific metal categories to ignore. This is useful for filtering out common junk metals.
- SENS (Sensitivity): Use the 'SENS' button and '+' / '-' buttons to adjust the detector's sensitivity. Higher sensitivity increases detection depth but may also increase false signals in mineralized ground.
- VOLUME: Rotate the VOLUME knob to adjust the audio output level.
6.4 Search Modes
The MD-3030 offers two primary search modes:
- LCD Mode: Provides visual feedback on the display, including target ID and depth.
- Sound Mode: Utilizes three unique audio tones (high, medium, and low) to discriminate between different types of metals.
The detector also features ultra-slow scan recognition, allowing for precise distinction of metal types with a very slow sweep of the search coil.
6.5 Using Headphones
For enhanced audio clarity and to conserve battery life, you can connect 3.5mm headphones (not supplied) to the headphone jack on the control unit.
6.6 Waterproof Search Coil
The 240mm search coil is waterproof, allowing you to detect in shallow water or wet environments. Note: The control unit is NOT waterproof and must be kept dry.
7. Maintenance and Care
- Cleaning: Wipe the detector with a damp cloth after each use. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the detector in a cool, dry place when not in use. Remove batteries if storing for extended periods to prevent leakage.
- Cable Care: Ensure the search coil cable is not kinked or damaged.
- Battery Replacement: Replace batteries when the battery indicator on the LCD shows low power.
8. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No power | Batteries are dead or incorrectly installed. | Check battery polarity; replace with fresh 9V alkaline batteries. |
| Erratic signals / False signals | High sensitivity setting; electromagnetic interference; mineralized ground. | Reduce sensitivity (SENS); move away from power lines or other electronics; adjust DISC/NOTCH settings. |
| No audio output | Volume too low; headphones not connected properly or faulty. | Increase volume; check headphone connection or try without headphones. |
| Poor detection depth | Low sensitivity setting; large amount of junk metal; deeply buried target. | Increase sensitivity (SENS); clear area of surface junk; sweep slower. |
