5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Chain Breaking (Removal)

  1. Prepare the Chain: If the chain has a riveted pin, it is highly recommended to grind down the head of the pin you intend to remove. This reduces stress on the tool and prevents premature wear or damage to the break tip.
  2. Assemble the Tool: Loosen the sprocket nut on the chain press. Unscrew the bottom bolt on the chain press tool. Place the spring onto the selected break pin (e.g., 2.2mm, 3.0mm, 4.0mm, or 5.0mm) and insert it into the tool. Replace the tightening bolt and remove the top bolt. Screw on the handle and lever.
  3. Position the Tool: Place the chain press tool over the chain link you wish to break. Ensure the break pin is aligned directly with the center of the chain pin you are removing. The back plate should be securely positioned against the chain link.
  4. Break the Chain: Slowly and steadily turn the handle to tighten the tool. This will force the break pin through the chain pin, pushing it out the other side. Continue until the chain link is separated.

5.2. Chain Riveting (Joining)

This tool can also be used to rivet chain links, creating an endless chain or securing a master link. Ensure you have the correct rivet set (anvil) and press plate for your chain type.

  1. Prepare the Chain: Insert the new master link or chain pins through the chain ends. Place the outer plate onto the pins.
  2. Position the Tool for Pressing: Select the appropriate press plate and anvil. Position the chain press tool over the master link, ensuring the press plate is against the outer plate and the anvil supports the inner plate.
  3. Press the Plate: Slowly turn the handle to press the outer plate onto the pins. Ensure the plate is pressed evenly until it matches the width of the other chain links. Do not over-press.
  4. Rivet the Pins: Replace the press plate with the riveting anvil. Position the tool so the riveting anvil is centered over one of the master link pins. Slowly turn the handle to flare the end of the pin, creating a secure rivet. Repeat for the other pin(s). The goal is to slightly mushroom the pin end to prevent the outer plate from coming off.

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, clean all components of the tool to remove grease, dirt, and metal shavings. Use a clean cloth and a suitable degreaser if necessary.
  • Lubrication: Apply a light coat of oil to all threaded parts and moving components to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation.
  • Storage: Store the tool kit in its original carrying case in a dry, clean environment to protect it from moisture and damage.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the break pins and anvils for wear or deformation. Replace any damaged components immediately to prevent injury or damage to the chain.

7. Troubleshooting

  • Difficulty Breaking Chain: Ensure the chain pin head has been ground down if it is a riveted pin. Verify the break pin is correctly aligned with the chain pin. Do not use excessive force; if the pin is not moving, re-check alignment and ensure the correct break tip is used.
  • Break Pin Bending/Breaking: This often occurs due to improper alignment, attempting to break a riveted pin without grinding its head, or using the wrong size break tip for the chain. Always grind down riveted pin heads and ensure perfect alignment.
  • Difficulty Riveting: Ensure the correct riveting anvil is used. The pin must be properly seated and the outer plate pressed to the correct width before attempting to flare the pin. Do not over-flare, as this can damage the pin or the chain.
  • Tool Slipping: Ensure all components are securely tightened before operation. The threaded handle is designed for maximum torque and non-slip performance; ensure your grip is firm.
