3. Setup and Initial Operation
3.1 Winding the Watch
Your Orient Mako-3 watch features an automatic movement that is powered by the motion of your wrist. It also supports hand-winding.
- To hand-wind, unscrew the crown (if applicable) and turn it clockwise for approximately 30-40 rotations. This will provide sufficient power reserve to start the watch.
- Once worn, the automatic movement will continue to wind the watch with your natural arm movements.
3.2 Setting the Time and Date
The crown has multiple positions for setting the watch functions.
- Position 0 (Normal Position): Crown is fully pushed in and screwed down (if applicable) for water resistance.
- Position 1 (First Click): Pull the crown out to the first click. Turn the crown to set the day and date. Turn clockwise for date, counter-clockwise for day. Avoid setting the day/date between 9 PM and 3 AM to prevent damage to the movement.
- Position 2 (Second Click): Pull the crown out to the second click. Turn the crown to set the time. The second hand will stop (hacking feature), allowing for precise time setting. Push the crown back to Position 0 and screw it down to ensure water resistance.
4. Operating the Bezel
The Orient Mako-3 features a unidirectional rotating bezel, commonly used for timing events, especially in diving.
- Rotate the bezel counter-clockwise to align the zero marker with the minute hand.
- The minute hand will then indicate the elapsed time against the bezel's markings.
- The unidirectional rotation prevents accidental increases in timed duration, a critical safety feature for divers.
5. Maintenance and Care
- Cleaning: Wipe the watch regularly with a soft, dry cloth. For stainless steel, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by drying.
- Water Resistance: Always ensure the crown is fully pushed in and screwed down (if applicable) before exposing the watch to water. Rinse the watch with fresh water after exposure to saltwater.
- Temperature: Avoid exposing the watch to extreme temperatures or sudden temperature changes.
- Shocks: While durable, avoid strong impacts or shocks to the watch.
- Magnetism: Keep the watch away from strong magnetic fields, which can affect its accuracy.
- Service: Regular servicing by an authorized watchmaker is recommended every 3-5 years to maintain optimal performance and water resistance.
6. Troubleshooting
- Watch Not Running: If the watch has stopped, it may need to be wound. Hand-wind it as described in Section 3.1 or wear it for several hours to allow the automatic movement to build up power reserve.
- Incorrect Time/Date: Refer to Section 3.2 for instructions on how to correctly set the time, day, and date.
- Water Inside Crystal: If condensation or water appears inside the crystal, immediately take the watch to an authorized service center. This indicates a breach in water resistance.
