1. Introduction

The XMK GK-PN400 Generator Interlock Kit is designed to provide a safe and reliable method for connecting a portable generator to your home's electrical panel during a power outage. This device ensures that the main utility breaker and the generator breaker cannot be simultaneously engaged, preventing dangerous backfeeding of power into the utility grid. Proper installation and operation are crucial for safety.

2. Important Safety Information

WARNING: Electrical work can be dangerous and should only be performed by qualified personnel. Always disconnect power at the main service entrance before beginning any installation. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury, death, or property damage.

3. Product Compatibility

This interlock kit is compatible with specific Siemens and Murray 150 or 200 Amp electrical panels. It is critical to verify your panel type and the spacing between the main and branch breakers before installation.

5. Installation Instructions

Before proceeding, ensure all power to the electrical panel is disconnected at the main service entrance. It is highly recommended that installation be performed by a licensed electrician.

  1. Prepare Panel: Turn off the main circuit breaker and any branch circuit breakers that will be affected by the interlock installation. Remove the panel cover.
  2. Position Interlock Plate: Place the bottom portion of the interlocking plate above the top right branch breaker, aligning it with the main breaker. Mark the locations for drilling the three mounting holes on the panel cover.
  3. Drill Holes: Carefully drill three holes at the marked locations on the panel cover using the supplied 4.8 mm drill bit. Ensure no metal shavings fall into the electrical components.
  4. Attach Interlock Plate: Secure the interlocking plate to the panel cover using the provided shoulder screws and hex nuts. Ensure the plate moves smoothly and does not obstruct breaker operation when in the correct position.
  5. Apply Labels: Affix the warning and instructional labels to the panel cover as indicated in the diagrams or as required by local codes.
  6. Reinstall Cover: Carefully replace the panel cover, ensuring all wiring is clear and the interlock mechanism functions correctly.

6. Operating Instructions

Follow these procedures carefully to safely transfer power between utility and generator sources.

6.1. Generator Start-Up Procedure (Transferring from Utility to Generator Power)

  1. Disconnect Main Power: Move the interlock plate to the 'Turn Down' position, which will block the generator breaker from being turned on and allow the main breaker to be turned OFF. Turn the main utility breaker OFF.
  2. Connect Generator: Plug your portable generator into the generator inlet box.
  3. Start Generator: Start your generator and allow it to warm up according to its manufacturer's instructions.
  4. Engage Generator Breaker: Move the interlock plate to the 'Turn Up' position. This will block the main breaker from being turned on. Turn the generator breaker ON.
  5. Restore Branch Circuits: Turn on desired branch circuit breakers in your electrical panel. Do not exceed the generator's capacity.

6.2. Generator Shutdown Procedure (Transferring from Generator to Utility Power)

  1. Turn Off Branch Circuits: Turn off all branch circuit breakers in your electrical panel.
  2. Disconnect Generator Power: Turn the generator breaker OFF.
  3. Shut Down Generator: Turn off your generator.
  4. Disconnect Generator: Unplug the generator from the inlet box.
  5. Restore Main Power: Move the interlock plate to the 'Turn Down' position. Turn the main utility breaker ON.
  6. Restore Branch Circuits: Turn on desired branch circuit breakers in your electrical panel.

7. Maintenance

The XMK Generator Interlock Kit requires minimal maintenance. Periodically inspect the interlock plate for any signs of wear, damage, or corrosion. Ensure that the screws and nuts remain tight and that the plate moves freely without binding. Clean with a dry cloth if necessary. Do not lubricate the interlock mechanism.

8. Troubleshooting

  • Interlock Plate Does Not Move Smoothly:
    Check for any obstructions or debris. Ensure the mounting screws are not overtightened, which could cause binding. Verify the panel cover is properly seated.
  • Cannot Engage Main or Generator Breaker:
    Ensure the interlock plate is fully in the correct 'Turn Down' or 'Turn Up' position. The interlock is designed to prevent both breakers from being ON simultaneously. If one is ON, the other cannot be engaged.
  • Generator Power Not Reaching Home:
    Verify the generator is running, the generator breaker is ON, and the interlock plate is in the 'Turn Up' position. Check the connection to the generator inlet box and ensure branch circuit breakers are ON.
