Victron Energy BlueSolar PWM-Light 10A Charge Controller User Manual

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation of your Victron Energy BlueSolar PWM-Light 10A Charge Controller. Please read these instructions carefully before installation and use to ensure optimal performance and longevity of the product.

2. Safety Information

  • Always disconnect the solar panel and battery before installing or servicing the charge controller.
  • Ensure correct polarity when connecting the solar panel, battery, and load. Incorrect wiring can damage the controller and connected devices.
  • Install the controller in a dry, well-ventilated area, away from flammable materials.
  • Do not attempt to disassemble or repair the controller. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.
  • Use appropriate wire gauges for all connections to prevent overheating.

3. Product Features

  • Load output with low battery voltage disconnect function to protect the battery from over-discharge.
  • Two-digit seven-segment display for clear indication and easy setting of load output functionality, including timer settings.
  • Three-stage battery charging (Bulk, Absorption, Float) for optimized battery health. Note: This charging profile is not programmable.
  • Load output protected against overload and short circuit conditions.
  • Protection against reverse polarity connection for both the solar array and the battery.
  • Integrated lighting control function with a single timer setting and day/night timing options.

4. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps for proper installation:

  1. Mounting: Choose a suitable location for the charge controller. It should be mounted vertically on a non-flammable surface, ensuring adequate airflow for cooling. Avoid direct sunlight or areas with high humidity.
  2. Battery Connection: Connect the battery to the charge controller first. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -). The controller will detect the battery voltage (12V or 24V) automatically.
  3. Solar Panel Connection: Connect the solar panel to the charge controller. Again, observe correct polarity. The controller will begin charging the battery if sufficient solar power is available.
  4. Load Connection: Connect your DC load (e.g., lights) to the load terminals of the charge controller. Ensure correct polarity. The load output is controlled by the controller to prevent battery over-discharge.

Important: Always connect the battery first, then the solar panel, and finally the load. Disconnect in reverse order: load, then solar panel, then battery.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Display and Indicators

The two-digit seven-segment display shows various parameters and settings. LEDs indicate the status of solar charging, battery level, and load output.

  • SUN LED: Indicates solar panel activity.
  • BAT LED: Indicates battery charge status (e.g., Bulk, Absorption, Float, Low Voltage).
  • LOAD LED: Indicates load output status (Normal, Overload, Short Circuit).

5.2. Setting Load Output Functionality

The 'SET' button is used to configure the load output. Press and hold the 'SET' button to enter programming mode. The display will flash, allowing you to cycle through options such as:

  • Always On: Load is continuously powered.
  • Timer Mode: Load is powered for a set duration after sunset.
  • Day/Night Mode: Load is powered only during specific light conditions.

Refer to the detailed manual for specific timer settings and day/night thresholds.

5.3. Battery Charging

The controller employs a three-stage charging algorithm:

  • Bulk: Maximum current is delivered to rapidly charge the battery.
  • Absorption: When the battery reaches a set voltage, the voltage is held constant while the current decreases. This ensures a full charge.
  • Float: Once fully charged, the voltage is reduced to a lower level to maintain the battery without overcharging.

6. Maintenance

To ensure reliable operation, perform the following maintenance checks periodically:

  • Connections: Inspect all wiring connections for tightness and corrosion. Loose connections can cause voltage drops and overheating.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the controller clean and free from dust and debris. Ensure ventilation openings are not obstructed.
  • Environment: Verify that the operating environment remains within specified temperature and humidity ranges.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues, consult the following table:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No display/No powerBattery not connected or low voltage; reverse polarity.Check battery connections and voltage. Ensure correct polarity.
Battery not chargingSolar panel not connected; insufficient sunlight; reverse polarity on solar.Check solar panel connections and polarity. Ensure adequate sunlight.
Load not workingLow battery voltage disconnect active; overload/short circuit; incorrect load settings.Check battery voltage. Reduce load. Verify load settings using the 'SET' button.
Overload/Short Circuit indicationExcessive current draw from load; faulty wiring.Disconnect load, check for short circuits, reduce total load current.
